The 20th annual City Arts Camp returns June 25 and runs through June 29 in Allentown.

The camp, a collaborative project of the Allentown Art Museum, Allentown Symphony Association, The Baum School of Art, Civic Theatre of Allentown, Community Music School, and Repertory Dance Theatre, allows campers to learn about the arts while participating in activities and classes run by the Allentown arts nonprofits.

The camp is for children from ages 7 to 11 and is held 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day.

Shannon Fugate, Executive Director of the Baum School, which is the lead administrator of the City Arts Camp, is excited about this year’s program.

“It’s a collaborative summer camp that introduces kids to visual and performing arts, music, theater and dance,” she says.

“It’s a week where kids have the opportunity to be fully immersed in the arts. They learn so much and so quickly.

“The kids just love it. We have kids who come every year until they are aged out and who have come back as teens as volunteer counselors,” Fugate says.

Each organization offers programming for the campers in their given field.

At the Allentown Art Museum, campers get a behind-the-scenes look at the exhibits in an art museum.

During their time at Miller Symphony Hall, children learn about the workings of the symphony.

At the Baum School of Art, there will be drawing, painting and sculpting.

Civic Theatre of Allentown presents acting lessons.

Community Music School will teach campers to play the Flutophone.

The children will learn the basics of choreography and dance at Repertory Dance Theatre.

On the last day of camp, a performance where the campers can show off all they’ve learned will be presented at 4 p.m. June 29 on the Miller Symphony Hall stage. “The kids just love appearing on stage,” says Fugate.

“There is no child that is not a candidate for City Arts Camp,” she says. “All children are creative and we each have an inner artist.

“Arts education is important for kids. The arts teach us about problem-solving, to innovate, and to understand our world.”

City Arts Cultural Camp’s tuition includes program materials. Campers are responsible for bringing their own lunch. Space is limited and some financial aid is available for campers in need.
