Like most of the top athletes at last Friday’s Allentown School District Invitational Track and Field Meet, Salisbury’s Erica Holben used the event as a gauge of how things stand with just over two weeks left before the postseason begins.

The Falcon junior entered the meet as the top seed in high jump at 5 feet, 3 inches and finished second last week at J. Birney Crum Stadium with a height of 5-1.

“It wasn’t my strongest of the season,” said Holben. “I still got up there at 5-1. My current personal record is 5-3, but I wasn’t able to get that today. I’m hoping to get that at leagues and districts this year in order to get to states. “I had two meets earlier in the week so my legs were a little tired today and I just came straight from long jump to high jump.”

Bangor’s Emily LaBar won the event at 5-1 by clearing that height on her first attempt. Holben cleared 5-1 on her second attempt to beat Parkland’s Grace Steurer, who also finished at 5-1 but took three attempts to get over the bar at that height.

Holben finished just behind LaBar in last year’s Colonial League Championships, taking third place. The late-season ASD Meet gave both athletes a chance to see how they stack up to one another with the postseason looming.

“A lot of the girls I compete against in this meet I’ll compete against in leagues and districts,” said Holben. “I like to see what they were competing at today and what heights they were getting.”

Holben was the only medal winner for Salisbury at the ASD Meet.

Jack Reichenbach came close to medaling as he finished fourth in high jump at 6-3.

Timothy Buda (200) and Shane Artis (1600) both earned fifth-place finishes. Buda ran a 23.89-second 200-meter dash, while Artis finished the 1600 in 4:46.83.

Other Falcon athletes finishing in the top 10 last Friday include Melena Koutch, who was eighth in triple jump at 32-0; Mackenzie Delano, who was eighth in 100 at 11.8; and Madison Jewell, who finished 10th in pole vault at 7-6.

Kulp takes second in high jump

Former Falcon Bobby Kulp, who now attends Bethlehem Catholic High School, cleared 6-5 for second place at the ASD Meet.
