There was a public hearing prior to the April 19 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting to discuss the recommendation regarding the roadway sufficiency analysis report and transportation capital improvement program.

The traffic impact advisory committee, comprised of volunteers, also attended the hearing.

Guided by legislation, Act 209 includes studies of various roadways and intersections.

There were 35 roadways studied with 11 being in the western portion of the township and 24 being in the eastern portion of the township. Intersections were also included in the study. It was noted improvements for any roadway intersections must first be studied.

Recommendations included the widening of Route 100 and Krocks Road North and Route 222 where much needed improvements were noted. A resident complained about an area where there is limited parking and building access due to another resident establishing an in-home office. Excessive parking in the area is dangerous as well as inconvenient for neighbors. Access to the building can be difficult for a handicapped person. This will be further investigated.

In other meeting news, the Quarry Park lighting project is almost complete. There will be a test of the lights 9 p.m. April 26.

The proposed warehouse project at 3262 Schoeneck Road will have a public hearing in the near future.

Norfolk Southern will do maintenance on the railroad tracks on Church Street. Therefore, this road will be closed April 30 to May 3 with a detour.

The work at the intersection of Minesite Road and Cedar Crest Boulevard is underway. A traffic light will be installed with street widening to allow for turning lanes. There are also some stormwater drainage improvements to be made. This project is expected to be completed by spring of 2019.

The commissioners are looking for an update on the traffic light at Willow Lane and Sauerkraut Lane. The project has begun but commissioners are looking for the completion date.

April 27 is Arbor Day. Lower Macungie Township will plant eight trees at the intersection of Sauerkraut Lane and Willow Lane. This event will begin 5 p.m.

The solicitor reported he wrote a letter to Adams Outdoor Advertising to have the billboard removed June 1 from Hamilton Boulevard. There has been no response.

Community Day will be held 4 to 8 p.m. May 1 at the Lower Macungie Community Center. All residents were invited to attend.

Benches and bike racks have been purchased for Heritage Park. To compete this project, warmer weather is needed.

The proposed improvement to Wild Cherry Park for parking was discussed. There were three proposals.

Two solutions were proposed for the problem at Rodale Park. One was to lock the park after hours which was not particularly feasible and the other was to eliminate lighting in the park. This suggestion was approved.

A zoning amendment was approved for signs and lighting standards. This amendment will now allow for newer lighting and signage and have new standards for height, size, amount of light and timing of lighting.

There was an executive session after the meeting to discuss real estate matters.
