With bedtime approaching, a team of construction vehicles needs to get to sleep, but Crane Truck, Bull Dozer and Cement Mixer find that getting ready for bed is a job in itself.

Beloved by parents and children alike, these characters from the children’s book, “Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site!,” come to life in an award-winning family musical, at 2 p.m. April 21, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown, when the sing-along production of “Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, the Musical!” illustrates that everybody, even busy construction vehicles, need their rest.

“It’s a show that everyone loves,” Nina Meehan, director of the production, says in a phone interview from San Francisco where the show received six Bay Area Theatre Awards.

“It appeals to adults and kids, and that is really important. It has this combination of whimsical and sweet. For kids, there is something tangible about what a construction vehicle does. They build. Every kid builds as a child.”

Meehan also believes that the show’s themes about working together and the importance of rest allow the audience to relate. “Kids recognize themselves in the behavior of the characters,” she says. “The song ‘I’m Just Not Sleepy,’ sung by Bull Dozer, is always a huge hit.”

To bring the construction vehicles like Bull Dozer to life on stage, actors each wear wheeled shoes and a hard hat with their vehicle on it. “Not one child has ever questioned the validity of the characters,” says Meehan.

Meehan recommends the musical for children ages 3 to 9-years-old and their families. The show runs about one hour. There’s a song every three minutes to keep little ones excited and focused.

“It’s very funny,” says Meehan, “and everyone will enjoy it. In the end, ‘Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, The Musical!’ Is really about knowing that your friends are there to support you.”
