Liebman eclectic, electronic
Saxophone legend Dave Liebman returns to “Jazz Upstairs,” 7:30 p.m. April 20, Rodale Community Room, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown. This time, he brings keyboardist Bobby Avey to compliment his musical offerings.
Liebman has done it all. He’s a National Endowment for the Arts “Jazz Master.” He has been named first place in the soprano sax category for Jazz Ed, Jazz Times, and Downbeat.
He has been named Jazz Man of the Year; honored for Best Record of The Year, nominated for a Grammy, received the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government, and inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Association of Jazz Educators for contributions to jazz pedagogy.
Liebman has played with such greats as Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner, John Scofield, and Richie Beirach, to name a few.
His discography has more than 500 titles, including several with his long-time band, Dave Liebman Group, and with his quintet, Expansions.
His latest CDs include “Compassion: The Music of John Coltrane,” with Joe Lovano; “Masters in Bordeaux,” with Martial Solal, and “Expansions Live,” with his latest group.
Of the “Jazz Upstairs” concert, Liebman says, “I’ve been in Allentown the last five or six years. I’m encouraged and surprised at the audience reaction. They’re always 100 percent behind us.”
“The piano and sax pairing will be much more intimate, low-key. It will be another challenge with some electronics, some free jazz.”
His partner for the concert, Bobby Avey, is a standout musician in his own right. The summa cum laude graduate of Purchase Conservatory of Music received the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition in composition in 2011.
Avey’s CD credits include “A New Face,” “Authority Melts From Me,” and “Be Not So Long To Speak,” the latter his first solo piano album, released in 2013.
While still in college, he collaborated with Liebman to create “Vienna Dialogues,” which features arrangements and reinterpretations of classical pieces from Chopin and Schumann to Handel and Mahler, among others.
There will be two sets for the “Jazz Upstairs” concert. The first is expected to include classical repertoire. The second is to be a presentation of ambient sound and textural landscapes.
Says Liebman, “Bobby has an electronic keyboard with quite a number of textures. He creates an electronic ambience with textural shades of ethnic world music.
“We’ll do one Chopin sonata and some from Bobby’s first CD, as well as some from my CDs. We’ll do some Monk, Ornette Coleman, even some Elvis, ‘Love Me Tender.’ I’m very eclectic in my choice of repertoire.”
As for future projects, Liebman says, “I’m always looking for new directions. I plan to do an ‘Earth’ CD. We already did ‘Air,’ “Fire,’ and ‘Water.’ It will be a very programmatic type of piece.
“I also have some new CDs coming out. One pays homage to Sydney Bechet, the father of the soprano sax. Another one relates to my time with Miles [Davis].”
