LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

STUDENT PROFILE by Julie Swan - Emma LaFaver, Lehigh Valley Charter HS for the Arts

Grade: 12

Family members: In addition to my mom and dad, I have three siblings ages 15, 13 and 10, and a cat named Thelonious Monk (after the jazz pianist). My family challenges me to be the best I can be, which has helped me achieve numerous awards and accomplishments.

Favorite subject: My favorite subjects are history and science. I enjoy learning U.S. history, especially the Revolutionary War, because knowing about the formation of our country and its people has helped me gain a better appreciation for where we came from. I’m also fascinated by human anatomy and the brain. I really enjoy learning what makes people tick!

Activities: I love to be outside, especially in the woods. I also enjoy photography, volleyball, camping, kayaking, flying and learning new instruments.

Next steps: I plan to go to college with a major in music therapy and take advantage of any opportunities to study abroad. My fascination with the human brain has led me to also consider studying neuroscience on a graduate level as it relates to music and the brain.

Career goals: I intend to work as a music therapist specifically in a hospital setting while working toward my Ph.D. in neuroscience.

Heroes: My teachers are my role models. They have demonstrated the kind of success I want to achieve as an adult musician. They have shown me how to bridge the gap between career and a passion in music.

Hobbies: I enjoy spending time outside either camping, kayaking or fishing. I love to travel and hope to do so for the rest of my life.

Current job(s): Since last year I have worked at Wegmans in the dairy department. (I’d love to help with any of your dairy needs.)

Volunteer/community work: I enjoy volunteering at my church and school.

Likes: Sushi, rain, traveling and yoga

Dislikes: Cilantro, raisins and cooked carrots

Greatest accomplishment (so far): I’m proud to be an international member of the National Piano Guild for nine years and to have received the Dr. Albert Hofammann Scholarship for Young Pianists from the Allentown Music Club.

Advice for peers: Don’t let anyone stop you from doing what you love!
