First of four parts

Based on an analysis by Salisbury Press of statistics provided by the Salisbury Township Police Department in its 2017 annual report, several categories showed increases over 2016, including incident reports, arrests of juveniles and arrests for DUI.

There were again several hundred more incident reports in Salisbury during 2017, compared to 2016. There was also an increase in 2016, compared to 2015.

Salisbury Township Chief of Police Allen W. Stiles released the annual department year in review to township commissioners and administration. The report was made available March 21 to the media.

The procedure for hiring two township police officers is underway. One officer will replace a police officer who resigned last year. The other officer will be an additional full-time police officer.

The department has 21 police officers, 19 of whom are full time. There are two part-time officers.

Full-time officers include: chief of police, one detective, three sergeants, four corporals and four officers.

Five part-time township fire inspectors are under police department administration, as are five school-crossing guards. There are two department administrative assistants. The department has a total of 33 employees.

Here are highlights of the police department statistics for 2017 for Salisbury, which has a population of 13,505 and housing units totaling 5,285 in an area of 11.4-square-miles.

Calls dispatched: 8,807, down from 8,883 in 2016, and an increase from 7,987 in 2015.

Incident reports: 6,767, up from 6,591 in 2016, and 5,844 in 2015.

Arrests of adults: 348, down from 393 in 2016, and up from 279 in 2015.

Arrests for traffic violations: 1,898, down from 3,306 in 2016, and 3,173 in 2015.

Arrests of juveniles: 96, up from 90 in 2016, and 73 in 2015.

Arrests for non-traffic violations: 192, down from 250 in 2016, and 219 in 2015.

Investigations of vehicle crashes: 412, compared to 413 in 2016, and 349 in 2015.

Arrests for DUI: 43, up from 34 in 2016, and 26 in 2015.

Parking tickets issued: 466, down from 829 in 2016, and an increase from 414 in 2015.

Ambulance calls: 1,166, up from 1,026 in 2016, and 1,007 in 2015.

Fire calls: 200, up from 192 in 2016, and a decrease from 205 in 2015.

Alarm responses: 488, up from 428 in 2016, and 456 in 2015.

Overtime hours: 2,923.5, down from 3,640.5 in 2016, and 3,500 in 2015.

Part-time hours for police: 1,746, up from 1,559 in 2016, and a decrease from 1,867 hours in 2015.

Court hours for township police: 347, down from 369 in 2016, and an increase from 214 in 2015.

Police cruiser hours: 90,196, down from 179,694 in 2016, and 189,283 in 2015.

The township police department budget was $2,150,275 in 2017, with $1,836,123.92 of that in wages.

The township budget was $8,405,555 in 2017.

Police department expenditures were $2,249,233 in 2017.

Police department revenue was $140,102 in 2017, up from $138,071.74 in 2016, and $115,471.79 in 2015.

By category, police department revenue is:

Vehicle code violations: $84,000, up from $77,938.39 in 2016, and $64,386.44 in 2015.

Parking tickets revenue: $1,050, down from $1,455 in 2016, and an increase from $535 in 2015.

Parking tickets revenue for Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township: $4,105, down from $8,864.50 in 2016, and $4,812 in 2015.

Police reports revenue: $4,199, up from $3,959.75 in 2016, and $3,906.25 in 2015.

County fines revenue: $4,903, down from $8,759.10 in 2016, and $6,707.10 in 2015.

Security alarm ordinance revenue: $500, up from $25 in 2016, and a decrease from $600 in 2015.

Fingerprints revenue: $90, down from $125 in 2016, and an increase from $80 in 2015.

Fire inspection fees revenue was $41,255 in 2017, up from $36,945 in 2016, and $34,435 in 2015.
