The Middle School Jazz Festival took place April 6 at Emmaus High School. Congratulations to all of those who participated. Also, a special mention for our own East Penn student, Owen Hoffman of Eyer Middle School who was awarded best soloist. Owen plays the trombone. There were a total of seven middle school bands from the area competing in this event.

The college fair is May 2 at EHS. The counseling office is sponsoring a “Name That College” bulletin board contest for students. Students can pick up their entry forms in the counseling office. Read each teacher‘s profile and try to identify the school where each teacher earned their undergraduate degree. Use clues from the profile and feel free to talk to the teachers as well. Students who correctly identify all 10 colleges will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Wawa gift card. Completed entry forms are due in the counseling office by 2:30 p.m. April 27.

The high school celebration of National Library Week involves offering a different puzzle in the library each school day this week. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate. At the end of every day, the library staff will randomly pull several names from the correctly completed daily puzzle pile and award multiple gift certificates to a local eatery. This year’s community sponsor and gift card provider is Countryside Ice Cream.

There will be a mandatory tryout meeting for EHS cheerleading for the 2018-2019 school year 6 p.m. April 11 in EHS cafeteria 2.

Any junior who is strongly considering attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after high school should add his/her name to a list in the counseling office to be considered for the Rensselaer Medal. The EHS counselors may nominate one qualified student to receive this award upon his/her acceptance to RPI in senior year. The scholarship is worth a minimum of $25,000 each year. To be considered, the student must be in the top 10 percent of the junior class and should be taking four years of math and science including biology, chemistry and lab-based physics. The deadline to submit your name for consideration is April 13.

Senior Ball tickets will be sold online April 12 to 26. The link will be available on the Google classroom page; be sure to join using code “yyss6y.” Voting for court will be open until April 27.

Afterball tickets will be on sale during all lunch periods on the following dates: April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25. The theme this year is “Out of this World.” There will be mini-golf, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, a casino, lots of food, many games and many chances to win awesome prizes. Seniors can even win a car! Tickets are discounted in advance.

Dr. Kieres and other administrators and faculty will continue to be available Thursdays after school in the multi-media room. They are interested in continuing to talk with groups of students about matters of school safety and advocacy. A supervised space for student groups to meet and plan advocacy activities is also provided. Students with all viewpoints are welcome!

Juniors interested in taking a free college course at Lehigh University during senior year can get involved in this competitive, tuition-free program during the upcoming fall semester. See Mrs. Greene in the counseling office for details. The application deadline is April 18.

The Class of 2021 is volunteering in the Walk MS Event at Coca Cola Park 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6. Volunteers are needed to help. Freshmen, visit google classroom to sign up to help out at a great event.
