BASD: State Geography Bee participants

Tow Bethlehem area students qualified to compete in the 2018 Pennsylvania National Geographic Bee April 6 in Harrisburg for the second level of the 30-year-old competition.

Fourth through eighth grade students bees were held to determine each school champions, who then took a qualifying test.

Up to 100 of the top-scoring students were invited to the state contests. Local qualifiers, with a chance to move on to the national competition, are Gianna Guarasi, grade six, Moravian Academy Middle School, and Joseph Duffy, grade eight, St. Anne School, both in Bethlehem.

Each state champion receives $200, the National Geographic Visual Atlas of the World, 2nd Edition and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship, held May 20-23 at the society’s headquarters.

The national champion receives a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all-expenses-paid expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour ll.

BASD: Mini-THON April 14 golf tournament

BASD Mini-THON is hosting a golf tournament at noon on April 14 at Whitetail Golf Club, 2679 Klein Road, Bath, 18014. Registration (cost increases after April 7) begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner, beverages, prizes, games. Foursomes are not required; pair ups with others is available.

BASD: Mini-THON Chaperones needed

The Bethlehem Area School District Mini-THON invites BASD parents of ES, MS and HS students to volunteer as chaperones for the 12-hour dance marathon from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 21 at Freedom High School. FREEDOM HS: Students selected for County Band

Alexa Sciarra, Isabelle Jabbour, Cailah Baran, Emily Shingara, Emily Sylvester, Leah Fastenau, Shane Deacon, Morgan Cahill, Josh Coel, Kevin Raneri, Luke George and Jacky Boyd represented Freedom at the third annual Northampton County Band Festival held at Easton HS recently.

BAVTS: Culinary Arts takes top cookie honors

The Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School Culinary Arts team was named the Cookie Crunch Champion at the Fourth Annual Girl Scout Cookie Crunch held Feb. 25 at SteelStacks’ Musikfest Café. Their wining entry was Lemonades Pepper Chicken Bites with Mango Salsa.

The events included a cooking demonstration for Girl Scouts led by four female chefs, motivational talks and dessert workshops.

The Cookie Crunch fundraiser benefits both Girl Scouts of Eastern PA and the ArtsQuest Art Education Fund, which provides quality arts and education programs for area students.
