Ryan Brown Freedom HS
Grade: 12
Family members: I live with my parents, Peter and Marie Brown, and my two sisters, Sarah, who is in ninth grade, and Megan, a junior at Millersville University studying elementary education.
Favorite subject: My favorite subject has consistently been mathematics in all its forms because of the complex nature or each and every problem. The combinations of numbers, variables and functions serve as an interconnected puzzle that is begging to be solved.
Activities: I am active in the National Honor Society and the math team at Freedom. I am also the co-founder and president of the engineering club, which was established in the 2015-16 school year. I have taken on leadership roles as the captain of the Science Olympiad team for the second year in a row. I also participate in two Explorer posts at Lutron Electronics and Air Products, where they introduce engineering and alternative STEM topics to high school students through engaging activities and cooperative projects.
Next steps: I am set on embarking on the adventure of college to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering. After experiencing the many facets of this discipline I envision myself pursuing a Ph.D. in a subset of my field. Some of the colleges that I am highly interested in include Cornell University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Career goals: I want to be able to find a job in a revolutionary company that is breaking the boundaries of science and engineering. Companies like SpaceX and Tesla are the types of companies that take the normal procedures and science fiction ideas and turn them into real world solutions. I always entertain the entrepreneurial aspect as an option as a way to create my own innovations and inventions in order to make my own contribution to the world.
Heroes: One of my heroes is my AP Calculus teacher Mr. Young, for his undying passion for the subject and his students. He has a rare combination of personality and teaching ability that makes him a truly unique individual. He could not be more genuine and enthusiastic and I hope I could be half the person Mr. Young is one day.
Hobbies: When I manage to find free time, I enjoy listening to music or playing the piano, guitar or ukulele. I love to build things, whether in the woodshop or on the 3D printer. I love fixing and using older things like typewriters, antique instruments and old computers. I also like exercising, especially through unique activities like rock climbing and American Ninja Warrior.
Current job(s): Over the past few years I have been doing landscaping privately around the local area. I enjoy being able to work outside while helping people who may not have enough time or capability to do the jobs themselves.
Volunteer/community work: I do a lot of community service at East Hills MS with National History Day students, National Junior Honor Society and a STEM activity period that I created with a close friend.
Likes: I like nature, organization, calculus and rain.
Dislikes: I dislike even numbers, cake and social media.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): My greatest accomplishment has to be helping found the engineering club at Freedom, because I saw a blank space in the extra-curricular activities that could be shaped to enhance the engineering classes.
Advice for peers: The best advice I can offer is to find the one thing that really lights you up. A career should never just be based on what you are good at or what makes money, but what will make you want to wake up every morning to go to work and do what you love. In the words of Confucius, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
