During a public hearing April 2 at the Macungie Borough Council meeting, Turkey Hill Mini Market, 141 W. Main St., requested the proposed transfer of a liquor license from a Turkey Hill in South Whitehall to the store in Macungie.

In June 2016, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed a liquor reform bill to allow the sale of alcohol in grocery stores and gas stations, among other changes to the liquor system.

An attorney and a project manager representing Turkey Hill said beer sales will be limited at the 24/7 convenience store. The store would not be enlarged, but remodeled to include a seating area which is a requirement to sell liquor in a grocery or convenience store. A large variety of beers would be offered.

Council members were concerned about beer sales since young children can enter the store. Some council members also felt there are enough places within the borough to purchase beer. The most concern was regarding the beer sales which are allowed through 2 a.m.

Council members Greg Hutchison and Barry Bloch voted to approve the transfer of the liquor license for Turkey Hill Mini Market. Council members Alma Akinijiola, Roseann Schleicher and Chris Becker voted no.

In other business, Devine School, 135 Lumber St., proposed a preliminary plan for subdivision of their lot. Becker recused himself from the vote due to a family member being employed by the school. The subdivision was approved.

A resident attended the meeting regarding damage to her car by a bump-out in the borough and was told to go to her insurance company. She has a $500 deductible and was seeking aide from the borough. The resident was told the borough will not reimburse for damages.

The residential rental ordinance was a topic of discussion, including a checklist, timing of the inspections and the hiring of a person to handle the inspections. A job description for the inspector is being written. Discussion will continue at a future meeting.

Schleicher commended the volunteers for the Easter weekend activities. She specifically thanked Audrey Erb who “assisted” the Easter Bunny. “She does a wonderful job. The kids love her,” Schleicher said.

Borough Manager Chris L. Boehm reminded residents the Macungie Cleanup Day is scheduled April 14. Volunteers are asked to meet 9 a.m. at Flower Park, Macungie Memorial Park and the fire department. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.

Appointments to various committees and boards were announced. Debra Cope was appointed to the civil service commission as an alternate. Alma Akinijiola was appointed to the civil service commission. Allen Crawford and Betty Silfes were appointed to the planning commission. Hutchison and Rosanne McGinn were appointed as Macungie Institute trustees. The zoning hearing board vacancy will be filled after the proposed candidate has been informed of the need for training for this job.

There were two executive sessions held regarding personnel matters and pending litigation.
