On March 13, faculty, staff, students and parents of students enrolled in Alburtis Elementary School in the East Penn School District gathered for the school’s monthly “Eagle Assembly.” During these assemblies, classes present seasonal songs and poems and high achieving students receive recognition.

In addition, each month students are encouraged to focus on developing a specific character trait. This month’s trait is generosity which provided the perfect segue into the surprise conclusion of the assembly.

In conjunction with AdoptAClassroom.org, Burlington Stores, Inc. donated $10,000 to Alburtis Elementary School.

AdoptAClassroom is a consortium of businesses to which Burlington Stores, Inc. belongs.

Upon opening a new facility, “Burlington chooses a school within [the store’s] sending area” to support. The school’s administration and faculty determine how the funds, which must be spent at consortium member businesses, will be utilized.

At the conclusion of the March “Eagle Assembly,” Mike Collins, Burlington’s representative, made the official check presentation to Principal Cheryl A. Scalzo.

According to Scalzo, the money may be used to develop “a school garden which will bring students and faculty together in a school-wide STEM (Science, Technology. Engineering, Math) project,” a “break out” room where students engage in highly stimulating activities and/or a reflection area.

Whatever the final decision for the use of the funds, Scalzo said the students will benefit directly from Burlington’s generosity and this bonus will be used to “...enhance what our kids [already] have.”
