LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Jasmine Ortiz

Grade: 12

Family members: My mom and dad are professionals who own their own company and have supported me through my artistic career since age 6 as an actor and age 3 as a musician.

Favorite subject: I of course favor my guitar ensemble, piano tech and photography classes, but I have a special love for English and math classes as well. I love performing and learning new things on my instruments, as well as gaining new perspective on visual arts. I enjoy English because of the creativity of writing short stories and analyzing poetry. I enjoy math because of how definitive it is. Things aren’t left up to interpretation and there is a certain way to reach a goal.

Activities: I enjoy traveling and representing my country as a student ambassador in Europe, as well as learning languages such as Spanish and Mandarin. I have a special place in my heart for several philanthropic causes, like working with local soup kitchens and raising money for underprivileged children. I have been a professional actor since age 6 and continue to work and audition. My favorite activity would be music. I play five instruments, write and compose songs and record originals in the studio.

Next steps: I plan on attending a top university for music business and production, geared toward performers. I plan on continuing my pursuit of a professional music career during and after college.

Career goals: I will become a top music producer in addition to being a successful recording artist, in the vein of Pharrell and Kanye, the first female Hispanic-American to do so in three languages.

Heroes: First and foremost, God for giving me amazing parents and the life I am blessed to lead. A hero closer to my age is Malala Yousafzai. She inspires me for being a feminist, human rights advocate and defending her right to an education, even if it meant putting her life in danger by standing up to the Taliban. A musical hero is Beyonce Knowles-Carter, because of her resilience, determination and ever-evolving presence in the music industry. Last year I saw her live in concert and while pregnant she performed a three-hour concert in the rain, putting on an amazing show. She was the epitome of professionalism and high quality musicianship.

Hobbies: I enjoy photography, dance, horseback riding, archery, gymnastics, yoga and hiking. I also love spending time with my three dogs.

Current job(s): I interned last summer at a local solar development financing company, where I learned the importance of green energy in the global marker.

Volunteer/community work: My experience being a Girl Scout has led me to many fulfilling community service opportunities, from highway cleaning, breast cancer awareness walks, feeding the hungry, volunteering for local causes to helping out on a farm.

Likes: I like going to the beach, amusement parks, roller coasters, Harry Potter, Halloween and all accompanying activities.

Dislikes: I dislike greasy foods, ill-fitting jeans, rusty guitar strings and sitting in traffic.

Greatest accomplishment (so far): Something I am really proud of is having produced, marketed and performed in my school’s first ever student run fundraising concert, “Rock Your School,” which raised a lot of money for Charter Arts and got the whole community involved. It took many long hours and months of preparation to get the project off the ground. I hope it will remain a staple in the Charter Arts fundraising campaign.

Advice for peers: My advice would be to stay true to yourself, stay humble, manage your time and never give up on what you’re passionate about. Remember that bullies don’t matter, and if you are being bullied, seek adult help. School and life can get overwhelming, but even if you make mistakes along the way, no one is perfect and you can still come out on top.

Student profile subjects are selected by faculty and administration at the individual schools.
