Patriots’ Day Dinner April 21

SHELTER HOUSE

The Shelter House Society will host the annual Patriots’ Day Dinner April 21 at Citizens Number 2 Fire Company, 10th and Broad streets, Emmaus. The dinner begins 6:30 p.m.

Following dinner, historian/photographer Scott Herring will present the program, “250 Years of Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal.” Herring’s presentation will feature an illustrated talk with images of the underground as hard coal is wrested from its vein and brought to the surface.

Herring will speak about “coal holes” and the progression of coal into anthracite. He will show images of coal underground awash with natural water seepage.

“It really shows the color of the rock,” he says.

Scott Herring grew up in Tamaqua and began taking photographs as a kid. He considers himself “a fifth-generation underground family.” And he sees the mining of anthracite and those who mine it as a cultural phenomenon.

Reservations are required for the annual Patriots’ Day Dinner. Call 610-797-6687 to reserve by April 17.
