The Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department has begun its annual appeal for donations for the department’s operating funds with a letter to those residing in the western Salisbury fire district.

In the letter, Chief Joshua Wells said contributions provide revenue to operate the company’s two fire stations, purchase and maintain firefighting equipment and protective gear and provide training for the all-volunteer organization.

Wells said it is a common misconception that the fire department is fully funded by the township of Salisbury, but that only about a third of the fire company’s $175,000 annual operating budget comes from the township.

The letter asks for a $40 minimum donation from each household protected in the fire district, with donations able to be received by mail or online. Historically, Wells said, “These donations come from just four of every 10 families we protect.”

Additional information about the fire company can be found on the department’s website at www.westernsalisbury.org.
