A divine stage performance of “The Music Man,” book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson was offered at Saucon Valley HS in four showings March 8 through 11. The musical was produced and directed by Chad A. Miller who also directed the music and vocal sections. Joanellyn Schubert was choreographer. Kimberly Tassinaro was assistant director-choreographer. Also involved were technical director Patrick Mertz, pit director Herb Payung, and acting coach Eric Hersh. Costume design was provided by Scaramouche Costumes. There were16 players in the orchestra that was positioned directly below the stage. Stage crew consisted of 22 members. The musical focuses on a fictional town “River City, Iowa”, in 1912 where con-artist Harold Hill played by Ben Johnson comes in with a scheme to sell band costumes and instruments posing as an all boy band director. The catch: Hill has no music experience, so when local librarian and piano teacher Marian Paroo played by Meghan Altemose calls his bluff, the tide turns to decency with the pair finding love as a most unusual pairing. “The Music Man” premiered on Broadway in December 1957. Songbook includes “Till There Was You”, “Lida Rose” sung by a quartet, and “White Knight.”
