LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Article By: FREEDOM NOTES Carson Swick Honoring shooting victims

On Tuesday, March 20, people all across the Northern Hemisphere flipped their calendars from winter to spring, hoping to leave behind bitterly cold, windy days. Spring is a time of happiness where nature comes back to life, and there is always a sense of excitement in the air. People celebrate this change of seasons in a variety of ways, but at Freedom HS, students and teachers rejoice as the school year approaches its conclusion.

For high schoolers, spring marks more than just the end of the school year. Just because the year is winding down, there is no end to the fun events students have to look forward to.

In the world of sports, spectators will no longer have to sit in the cramped gymnasium to watch their favorite student athletes. While watching Hailey Silfies drain a clutch three-pointer for the District Championship was fun, it is time to change seasons. Baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field events all begin competing in the last week of March.

Speaking of change, Freedom students and staff participated in the National School Walkout last week. The student council prepared a tribute to each of the 17 people killed in Parkland, Fla., and several class officers spoke in favor of gun reform.

“As young students, we all represent the future, and can allot for the real potential of our country,” said student Alfredo Suarez, vice president of the Class of 2020.

The protest was led by Class of 2018 officers Rachel Black and Hailey Miller. The entire walkout was live-streamed on Twitter by the school’s award-winning newspaper, The Freedom Forum.

In April, the Freedom Theatre Company will take to the stage for director Jennifer Wescoe’s 38th show over the course of 18 years. Wescoe will be retiring after she directs this show, “Once Upon a Mattress.” Tickets are currently on sale, and the musical will opens Wednesday, April 11.

It’s safe to say that Freedom is a lively place is the spring. Students, especially seniors, have many opportunities to make the last part of the school year a blast.
