LOWER MACUNGIE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Lower Macungie Middle School Theatre will present “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” 7 p.m. March 15 and 16 and 2 and 7 p.m. March 17 in the Lower Macungie Middle School auditorium.

Based on the Danish fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, the musical is an adaptation of the animated classic Disney film “The Little Mermaid.”

Directed by Patrick Campbell, about 130 students including cast, crew and orchestra will delight audiences with fun lively choreography, unique colorful costumes and songs as the adventure begins under the sea.

Headstrong mermaid Princess Ariel dreams of becoming human and exploring life above the sea even to the extent of sacrificing her voice. To her father’s dismay, with the help of underwater friends, Ariel follows her dreams and pursues love with a human prince.

Ben Post serves as technical manager for the production and says, “It’s been an interesting experience seeing costumes made, set building and the cast develop their skills and learn lines.

“It’s been hectic with the snow days we’ve had; the weather has definitely worked against the play (rehearsals).”

Although Post knows the musical is based on the film he said, “As it went on, it sort of grew into this unique ‘our version’ of ‘The Little Mermaid’ which was an interesting experience. It’s fun and we are enjoying doing the play.”

As stage manager, Bethany Brown works backstage helping with costumes, conflicts and repairs on the set.

“It’s an amazing show and so many good songs and costumes, it’s fabulous,” Brown said. She likes managing and working with the cast seeing the whole show come together. She especially likes set building. She thinks the message “The Little Mermaid” portrays is “follow your dream.”

Tessa Fritz plays Ariel’s loyal companion Flounder she describes as “outgoing but also shy in a way. He secretly has a crush on Ariel.” Fritz really enjoys the underwater scene with the dancing and bright costumes. She really loves singing and acting and always has a fun time being part of the ensemble. To Fritz, the musical’s message is “about love and basically if you work hard enough you’ll end up getting what you deserve.” She hopes the audience has as much fun watching as the students are performing this lively show.

The journey explores following your dreams and the sacrifices people make for love and acceptance.

Jenifer Trautmann is director of costume design, set design is directed by Jennifer Campbell and the choreographer is Diane Geroni.

Tickets can be purchased online at the school’s website, at the door before performances and by phone at 610-395-8593, ext. 26212.
