Tickets for Allentown Central Catholic High School’s spring musical Disaster! are now on sale. In the show, 1970s tunes take center stage in this homage to classic disaster films. The show runs 7 p.m. April 5, 6 and 7 and 2 p.m. April 7. Tickets can be purchased at acchs.info.

The “Disaster!” cast participated in a workshop March 1 with Broadway actor Adam Pascal, who starred in the original Broadway cast of “Disaster!” He taught various theater techniques and gave tips for the show. On March 2, the cast traveled to the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia to see Pascal perform in “Something Rotten!”

Student Neil Maydick placed second among percussionists in the District XI Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Competition, earning a spot in the Region V State Band. At the regional meeting at Middletown High School, which featured students from 70 high schools in 15 counties, Maydick placed fourth, landing him a spot as an alternate in the PMEA All-State Band.

Students competed at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science regional competition Feb. 24 at Northampton Community College. First place winners included Michael Fleck, Emily Jobes, Luke Kuklis, Natasha Kuklis, Stephen McGlynn, Elizabeth Ulicny, and Mary Wilson. Natasha Kuklis received a perfect score. These students will travel to Penn State University in May for the state meeting. Second place winners included Sarah Boardman, Snow Du, Sydni Ernst, Pamela Gonzalez, Kelsey Rodowicz and Danica Schofer.

The Science Olympiad team took second in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship at Northampton Community College Feb. 23. Derek Basta and Brendan Christ placed first in Helicopter; Priyanka Bhashym and Michael Fleck took second in Disease Detectives; David Carolan and Ryan Schanta were second in Ecology; and Derek Basta and Colton Schrettner finished second in Mousetrap Vehicle.

The chess team saw much success at the EPC Invitational Chess Tournament at Parkland High School Feb. 22. The day featured strong performances from gold medalists Preston Vasquez and Adam Zielinski and silver medalist Romario Elias.

The cultural fest and art reception, organized by the Internat Club, was held March 4. The event featured the “Welcome, Neighbor” poster exhibit by local photographer Marco Calderon. The posters told the stories of local immigrants from countries all over the world. During the day, food and music representative of Central’s diverse backgrounds were also enjoyed.

Vikette basketball overcame Wilson Feb. 24 with a score of 55-48 in the District XI 4A quarterfinals. They beat Tamaqua 44-42 in the semifinals Feb. 28 and advanced to the championship March 3. Viking basketball won against Pottsville with a score of 57-41 in the 5A quarterfinals Feb. 26. The team won in the championship game against Bangor with a score of 52-31 and will advance to States March 9.

The swim team saw success at the District XI Championships. Lily Atiyeh and Sam Stringer placed first and second, respectively, in diving. They will represent Central at the state competition in March.

The 2018 Diocese of Allentown CYO Boys Basketball Champions are the St. Joseph the Worker Blue Angels. The team features Central students Shaun Coulter, Gabe Martinez, Griffin Maxsim, Anthony Shrayer and Adam Zielinski. They will attend the state competition in Pittsburgh this month.

Robert Pietrobon has been appointed the new head football coach for Central Catholic. He acted as the interim head coach during the fall of 2017. Pietrobon, a 1973 alumnus of Central, has had more than 20 years of football coaching experience. He began his career with St. Catharine of Siena’s middle school CYO program 1995 to 2004 and went on to coach for Notre Dame Green Pond and Liberty.

Student Vincent Lynch was one of 33 football scholar-athletes honored at The National Football Foundation’s Lehigh Valley Chapter Dinner March 4. Lynch is a linebacker and running back for the Vikings. He ranks 26th out of 220 students. He is also a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, Central City Project and the basketball and track and field teams.

The Future Viking semi-formal dance will be held 7 to 10 p.m. March 16. The event is open to seventh and eighth grade students at Central’s feeder schools. There is a cost.

Central hosted the EPC Student Athlete Character Council Feb. 21. The event featured special guest Dr. Gabe Lewullis, an ACCHS alumnus. Central’s representatives were seniors Erin Arevalo and Kevin Kern and juniors Rachel Hess and Finn McMullen.
