Advocacy workshop on March 7
There will be a “Public Education Matters in Bethlehem” Parent Advocacy Workshop 2018 at 6:30 p.m. March 7, at Nitschmann MS, 1002 Union Blvd.
Speakers are Mark DiRocca, executive director of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators, and Joseph J. Roy, superintendent of schools, Bethlehem Area School District. The event is open to the public.
Scholarships available
March 15 medical scholarships deadline The Northampton County Medical Society Alliance is offering $1,000 scholarships to eligible medical, nursing and physician assistant students whose permanent residence is within Northampton County or Bethlehem.
The application and submission deadline is March 15.

The Bethlehem Garden Club awards one or more scholarships to Bethlehem area graduating seniors who are continuing their education in one of the following areas: conservation, horticulture, landscaping, flori-culture, environmental studies, forestry, botany, or a related field.

‘Dream Big’ deadline is March 26
The American Society of Civil Engineers - Lehigh Valley is holding a “Dream Big” inaugural Lehigh Valley Bridge Design scholarship contest as part of National Engineers Week. The free, online hands-on engineering design competition is for high school (grades nine through 12) and middle school students (grades six to eight) currently enrolled in a school or who are home schooled in Berks, Bradford, Carbon, Columbia, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Schuylkill, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne or Wyoming County.
Individuals or teams of two must download the Bridge Designer software and must submit their qualifying round entries by 1 p.m. March 26.
The top three teams in each category will compete in the finals on April 7 at the Banana Factory Arts Center, 25 W. Third St. Complete contest rules and entry procedures can be found at bridgedesigner.org/lehighvalley.
Human Services seeks volunteers
The Advisory Board for the Northampton County Department of Human Services Children, Youth & Families Division, is currently accepting volunteers to participate in, evaluate and promote programs for children, youth and their families within the framework of the Acts of Assembly. The AoA gives Northampton County and the Department of Public Welfare the responsibility and authority to administer a comprehensive program of social services for children and youth.
The Advisory Board meets one evening, every other month at the Department of Human Services, Bethlehem.

BASD Foundation gala set for March 20
The Foundation for the Bethlehem Area School District will hold the third annual business attire banquet beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 20 at the Sands Event Center. The presenting sponsor is St Luke’s University Health Center.
There will be a dinner, drinks, student performances and expo, a trivia game, “Are You Smarter Than A BASD Fifth grader” and a silent auction.

BAVTS wins cookie crunch honors
Students from the Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School’s Culinary Arts Program received top honors at the fourth annual Girl Scout Cookie Crunch held Feb. 25 at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks’ Musikfest Café.
The Cookie Crunch champions’ entry was Lemonades Pepper Chicken Bites with Mango Salsa. The Kids’ Choice Award winner was Bethlehem Dairy Store’s Peanut Butter Patties Ice Cream.
The event featured a cooking demonstration for Girl Scouts led by the 2017 “Hell’s Kitchen” runner-up Heather Williams, formerly of OAK Steakhouse and Marblehead Chowder House; Sarah Sobers of Buddy V’s Ristorante at the Sands; Girl Scout and “Chopped Jr.” winner Lucy Chelton; and 2014 “Hell’s Kitchen” contestant and Aramark at SteelStacks Executive Sous Chef Ashley Sherman.
Freedom: Special Olympics
Freedom HS hosted the Northampton County Special Olympics on Feb. 21. The event was a big success. Thanks to everyone who participated in any way.
Marvine: Fifth Graders Visit Vo-Tech
Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School recently gave Marvine ES’s fifth graders a tour of their facility plus introductions of different work trades with hands on activities.
The students visited engineering, plumbing, cosmetology, health care, cooking and other departments. They closed out the career day decorating cupcakes baked by BAVTS students.
