Allentown Fire Chief Lee Laubach Jr. and Arson K-9, Judge, were the hot items on the agenda Feb. 1 at the monthly meeting of AARP Chapter 5415.

The fire safety presentation at St. Timothy’s Church, Allentown, provided the senior citizens with information on how Judge can actually sniff out a potential fire before it begins.

Judge demonstrated his skills by sniffing through a line of aluminum cans in search of the one containing an accelerant.

When Judge found the accelerant, he indicated the find to Laubach and was rewarded with a treat.

Laubach and Judge, 9, have been a team more than eight years.

“[The presentation] actually translates into a lot of questions [the seniors] may have about fire safety,” Laubach, said. “So, that’s why I love doing the programs like this, because sometimes they don’t want to come down to the station or they don’t want to call.”

Laubach said if any of the senior citizens were to have questions about fire prevention, he was there to answer their questions.

The fire chief also told those at the meeting, Judge was a finalist for the 2016 American Humane Hero Dog Award.

Judge, who is very well known in the community, has his own Facebook page.

According to Laubach, Judge’s work is important to Allentown and the surrounding communities as he is one of only a handful of arson dogs in the state.

The duo have given more than 800 presentations.

Jeanne Tilghman, president of AARP Chapter 5415, said the group meets first Thursday of each month except during July and August.

She discussed the presentation by Laubach and Judge.

“I think it enlightens and gives them knowledge on what the fire department and K-9 Judge does,” Tilghman said, referring to how the presentation benefits AARP members.
