It was all smiles Feb. 23 at Potts’ Doggie Shop, 2428 Cherryville Road, Northampton, when owner Mark Mazziotta presented Hanna Edelman, 13, of Northampton, a $9,000 check as proceeds from the Jan. 14 fundraiser of hot dogs and trimmings to aid Hanna, who is battling leukemia.
It was cause for a great celebration after learning that, earlier in the week, Hanna successfully completed treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). She was receiving immune therapy treatment to combat the disease by enhancing the body’s natural healing powers. Hanna was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015 and underwent bone-marrow treatment only to later have a recurrence.
Hanna, with smiles and an air of optimism, is looking forward to returning to school in September as a freshman at Northampton Area High School.
Mazziotta and family members began the project to help persons and families with the disease after his sister, Gina, died of cancer in 2006. They have raised thousands of dollars to aid those in such need.
“Hanna is a remarkable girl,” Mazziotta said. “We are only too happy to be a small part of her life.”
