Allentown Central Catholic High School hosted the 44th Annual Allentown Diocesan Music Festival Jan. 27. The day featured band and chorus members from the diocesan high schools: Berks Catholic, Bethlehem Catholic, Central Catholic, Marian Catholic, Nativity BVM, and Notre Dame. Central’s performers were Thomas Cope, Meghan Cowen, Snow Du, Chris Elwert, Elena Kreger, Justine Magalona, Maria Romero, Danica Schofer, Ty Tran and Amanda Wechsler.

The Science Olympiad team placed third at the North Pocono Invitational Jan. 27. The team is led by officers David Carolan, Molly Dougher, Sydni Ernst and Colton Schrettner. Students Derek Basta and Brendan Christ took first place in the helicopter event. Central also medaled in many other events, including Dynamic Planet and Mousetrap Vehicle.

Catholic Schools Week was a lively week at Central Catholic. The students celebrated each day with different themes, including crazy hat/sock/tie day, class colors, white-out, groufit (grey outfit)and jersey/Eagles spiritwear.

The school celebrated a Mass Jan. 31, during which the Nicholas Caldarelli Scholarship was presented. This award is a four-year scholarship given to an incoming freshman; this year, it was awarded to Elizabeth Sayegh of Good Shepherd.

A plaque commemorating Linda Van Reed, a dedicated Central teacher who served the school for 38 years, was also presented. Students capped the week with a teacher appreciation luncheon and a pep rally, which featured the dance team, cheerleaders, pep band and a pie-a-teacher-in-the-face event.

As part of Catholic Schools Week, Central students that graduated from St. Ann School visited the Emmaus school Jan. 30 to host a pep rally. Central’s Vikette mascot, cheerleaders, drumline and students engaged the St. Ann students in exciting games and activities. Central students also visited St. Elizabeth and St. Thomas More, where the Scholastic Scrimmage team played against St. Thomas students in a mock match.

The Lehigh County Band Concert was held at Parkland Feb. 1. Central was represented by six musicians in the concert: seniors Thomas Cope (clarinet), Christopher Elwert (trombone), and Justine Magalona (flute); juniors Neil Maydick (percussion) and Maria Romero (clarinet); and sophomore Meghan Cowen (flute).

ACCHS student Greta Alderman was selected to attend the Fitzpatrick, Lentz and Bubba Pre-Law Shadow Day Feb. 9. The day will bring a visit to the Northampton County Courthouse and discussions with lawyers about a future in law.

Three members of the Viking basketball team are featured in a three-point shooter poll on lehighvalleylive.com. Senior Dat Lambert has 39 season three-pointers and 91 career shots, senior Jay Vaughn has 38 season and 120 career three-pointers and sophomore Nick Filchner has 39 season shots. Senior Margaux Eripret is also featured in a lehighvalleylive.com poll. She is being considered for the title of the area’s most clutch player, with 11.9 points per game this season. Visit the website to vote for favorite players. The Vikings’ current Eastern Pennsylvania Conference record is 10 to 3; the Vikettes’ is 8 to 4.

ACCHS student Jess Davis was recently named Lehigh Valley Live’s Girls Basketball Player of the Week. The Vikette scored 19 points and went 8-for-11 at the free throw line during Central’s 46-37 win over Parkland.

The swim team celebrated senior night at the meet against Saucon Valley. The seniors are Angie Castano, Danny Chlebove, Zac Johnston, Mia Molnar, Molly Nagle, Nicole O’Neill and Harison Stevens. The girls’ EPC record is 3 to 1 and the boys’ is 2 to 2.

An open house will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 11. Interested families will have the opportunity to tour the school, meet teachers and talk with students.
