The Rev. Edwin V. Schwartz

The Rev. Edwin V. Schwartz, 86, of Northampton, died Jan. 24, 2018, at St. Luke’s Hospital-Allentown.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late John W. and Kathryn V. (Byrne) Schwartz.

He attended Good Shepherd Elementary School and West Catholic High School, both in Philadelphia. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Wynnewood.

He was ordained to the priesthood May 14, 1960, by the Most Rev. J. Carroll McCormick at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia.

His first priestly assignment was parochial vicar at Saint Mary Church, Hamburg, and continued at Saint Catharine of Siena Church, Reading; Sacred Heart Church, West Reading; Saint Theresa Church, Hellertown; Saint Ursula Church, Fountain Hill; and Saint Anne Church, Bethlehem.

His first pastoral assignment was at the former Saint Mauritius Church, Ashland, and continued at the former Our Lady of Hungary Church, Northampton; and most recently at the former Saint Michael Church, presently Queenship of Mary Church, Northampton.

He was a regional director of vocations for both the Berks Deanery and for the Bishop’s Relief Agency of Northampton Deanery; a regional director of the Holy Name Society, West Schuylkill County; a regional coordinator for adult religious education at Northampton Deanery; an advocate and notary for the Diocesan Tribunal; a member of the Committee on Ecumenism; member of the Cardinal Brennan High School financial aid committee; member of the board of education; and on the board of trustees of both the priest retirement fund and of the lay employees’ pension fund.

Upon retirement, he was named Pastor Emeritus, Queenship of Mary Church, Northampton.

He is survived by a brother, John; a sister, Kathryn and her husband Charles Johnson; eight nieces and nephews, Mary Kathryn, Susan, James, Virginia, Robert, MaryClaire, Marie and Catherine; great-nieces; and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Claire McTamney and Virginia Theresa White; a brother, Robert; a brother-in-law, Jack McTamney; and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Anne Schwartz.

Arrangements were made by Reichel Funeral Home Inc., Northampton.
