East Penn School District’s eighth graders and their parents and guardians attended Emmaus High School’s Guidance Information Night Jan. 24.

Hosted by EHS Principal Dr. Kate Kieres and the guidance counselors, students had a chance to learn about what to expect in their freshman year.

Presentations held in the auditorium discussed the academic similarities and differences between middle and high school.

Presenters also explained the high school’s course requirements to show what it takes to succeed in ninth grade.

Guidance counselor Mike McInerney emphasized the importance of being a model student and said “grades are paychecks.” He went on to state students shouldn’t cram their schedules. “Strive for balance,” McInerney said. “Ninth grade should be a positive experience.”

Upperclassmen led a series of campus tours showing some of the school’s highlights. Staff members and EHS clubs gathered in the Locker Commons and adjacent hallways, showcasing opportunities for student involvement and further curriculum information.

In late January to early February, students will have another chance to meet with counselors during scheduling workshops that will take place at Eyer Middle School and Lower Macungie Middle School.

For the next few weeks, students can also ask questions on an online forum, supported by the TodaysMeet app.
