STUDENT PROFILE Laura Davison, Freedom HS by Julie Swan
Grade: 12
Family members: Karen Davison (mother), Brian Davison (father), Andrew Davison (brother)
Favorite subject: My all-time favorite classes are AP biology and choir. In AP biology, I really discovered what I want to do in the future. I was challenged as a student and learned how the world works on so many biological levels. In choir I have learned how to be a leader and have been able to do what I love. This year I became a soprano section leader, a student director and the choir president, allowing me to support the choir and move it forward. I also love to sing, so choir is a great way to start my day.
Activities: I play piccolo, flute and fife in the band, play cello in the orchestra and sing in the choir and two smaller ensembles, Les Chanteurs and Chorale. I have also been singing in my church choir for 14 years. I have been a Girl Scout for 12 years and participate in a Venture Crew. I have been a member of Freedom’s swim team for three years. I am also the student director of Freedom’s handbell choir.
Next steps: I hope to attend Lehigh University and double major in biochemistry and music.
Career goals: I would like to pursue research in the biochemistry field and hopefully contribute to the creation of better technologies to benefit people.
Heroes: My hero is my mother. When my brother and I were little, my mother was a stay-at-home mom while my father worked. She has back problems and fibromyalgia so she has to deal with constant pain. She worked through her pain to care for us while simultaneously volunteering at church and ShareCare Faith in Action (a nonprofit benefiting the elderly) and leading my Girl Scout troop for eight years. She now works part time, volunteers and is a part time nanny.
Hobbies: Two of my favorite hobbies are music and photography. Through music I am able to express complex emotions through a universal language. Photography allows me to capture a single moment and share it with others. I also enjoy swimming, reading and knitting.
Current job(s): I am certified as a lifeguard and I pet-sit and babysit occasionally.
Volunteer/community work: I volunteer at church in committees, in the choir and bell choir, and at vacation Bible school. I also volunteer at FHS band, choir and orchestra events, such as car washes, and have played flute in the pit orchestra for Freedom’s spring show, Peter Pan. I participate in community projects with Girl Scouts and Venture Crew. I am part of Freedom’s chapter of NHS and contribute to NHS service projects and events.
Likes: I like music, the color green, dragonflies, sunrises and babies.
Dislikes: I dislike tomatoes and bug bites.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): I was selected to play the piccolo solo in John Philip Sousa’s march, “Stars and Stripes Forever” in Freedom’s marching band.
Advice for peers: Never give up on what you love and be true to yourself. You can never make up lost time, so make the best of it.
