The first meeting of 2018 for the Salisbury Township Recreation Advisory Committee was held Jan. 15 at the municipal building.

Following a reorganization, Mark Wilson, representing the fourth ward, was voted as chairman, Pat Jacoby, representing the third ward, was voted vice chairman and Kim Ringhoffer, representing the first ward, was voted secretary. Also on the committee are Frank Adamcik, representing the second ward and Frank McCullough, representing the fifth ward.

Also in attendance was Recreation Director Genny Baillie.

Ringhoffer announced she has been planning a Community Day which was first talked about by the committee in 2017 with the goal to host an event for all residents.

The committee talked about having the event in May possibly at Green Acres Park or Salisbury Middle School. The concern with Green Acres Park was parking.

It was noted the 250th anniversary event was held in 2003 at SMS with no space problems reported.

Ringhoffer proposed a carnival theme with a moon bounce, obstacle course, cotton candy, popcorn, dunk tank and basket raffle. She suggested inviting the Salisbury Police Department and members of both fire companies to participate as well. She also suggested profits from the event be donated to the Race for Adam or another worthy charity.

Other suggestions included free blood pressure checks and health screenings, baking contests, library book sale, community vendors, therapy dogs and a Wildlands Conservancy presentation.

Also in attendance was Kelby Miller, with Boardwalk Bites, who has a food truck offering boardwalk-type food such as funnel cake, fried Oreos, French fries, frozen lemonade and more. She would be available to provide food during the event for purchase.

The committee talked about a tentative date of May 12 with a rain date of May 19.

Ringhoffer and the committee will next prepare a proposal and present it to Township Manager Cathy Bonaskiewich for review, prepare a more formal proposal, finalize details and present to township commissioners.

Regarding the Master Plan, Baillie said the township is awaiting grant decisions for Lindberg Park work, which are expected at the end of January or February.

McCullough talked about a request from Hamilton Park to make the Lindberg Park field bigger with 90 foot bases which was also discussed at the Nov. 20, 2017 recreation advisory committee meeting. The committee felt with having older children playing games there, players would lose too many home run balls into the flowers with the meadows in the outfield.

“I think it is also a safety issue with the portable mounds,” Wilson said.

In other business, the committee tentatively scheduled the township Easter egg hunt for 10 a.m. March 24 at Lindberg Park. Baillie said fliers will be prepared and distributed to the elementary schools closer to the hunt.

Baillie also said she will begin accepting applications in February for summer playground park program counselors. All applications will need to be completed before the end of March.

Baillie said she has a concern about using Lindberg Park for the summer playground program due to proposed construction but will wait to see if there will be a problem.

The next regular meeting for the committee will be 7:30 p.m. March 19 at the municipal building. Another meeting may need to be scheduled before that to discuss the Community Day details if approved.
