I scream, you scream for Da Vinci’s ice cream

Science should be fun, and making ice cream is definitely fun, so the Da Vinci Science Center put the two together for its 10th anniversary of Ice Cream Wars competition.

The science center gathered 10 local companies, including radio station B104, WFMZ 69 News, PPL, Highmark Blue Cross, Air Products and the Da Vinci Science Center itself, on Jan. 6, to see which one could make the best tasting ice cream using liquid nitrogen, which froze the ice cream instantly.

A record crowd of 1,800 attended the competition.

Recipes were different for each team but they all included sugar, dairy products and either vanilla extract or an extract provided by the respective team.

Each visitor could taste the ice cream at the various stations, and then vote for their favorite.

B104’s frozen hot chocolate recipe was named Ice Cream Wars champion.

This team was led by Mike and Steph, the radio station’s morning personalities.

Team B104 also won best team spirit from the science center’s foodie fan panel.

Their frozen concoction contained whole milk, chocolate milk, heavy cream, unsweetened cocoa, sugar, vanilla, chocolate sprinkles, whipped cream and mini marshmallows.

The foodie fan panel also announced other wins by the respective teams.

WFMZ 69 News received “Most Unique Recipe”; Highmark received “Most Refreshing”; and Air Products received “Best Brain Freeze.”
