Communities That Care (CTC) met Jan. 19 at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Whitehall, to discuss its monthly meeting and other business.

Shari Noctor, Whitehall Area Hunger Initiative president, gave a report regarding hunger awareness. The group continues to run monthly community meals and added an extra day to help aid families who work during the week. Meals are held 4-6:30 p.m. the first Sunday and third Tuesday of the month. The next meal will be held Feb. 4.

Plans are also underway for the second summer breakfast camp for school-aged children. There was discussion about how to attract more children and grow the program. According to Noctor, members are planning on sending out mailers.

The Snack Pack Pals program continues to grow, so much so that the group is running out of room to store the packs. Other school districts are starting similar programs and looking to Whitehall’s program as the model.

There will be a career fair March 7 for 10th-graders. This career-focused event will help students connect their interests with potential careers. There was some discussion about how to engage the students more and prepare them to get the most out of the event. It was suggested to represent trades at the fair as well, to appeal to students who aren’t necessarily planning on attending college.

A big topic for parent education continues to be the dangers of social hosting. CTC is planning to step up its social hosting education efforts in time for prom. There was discussion about how best to entice parents to attend presentations.

CTC is planning its annual meeting 8:30 a.m. Feb. 9 in the Whitehall High School LGI room, 3800 Mechanicsville Road. The theme for this meeting will be trauma and the impact on children. Dr. Veirdre Jackson, founder and CEO of Living Strong Consulting LLC, will be the keynote speaker. The group will also recognize a group or individual who has gone above and beyond for the community.
