Supervisors honor Eagle Scout

Weisenberg Township supervisors have honored Eagle Scout Sean Sprossel for the work he did at the township building.

Sprossel, who renovated the handicapped ramp to the rear of the building, sanded and painted the ramp and the Bilco door and installed new railing on the ramp along with some other items.

In other matters at the Jan. 8 meeting, Rochelle Kaplan and Dr. Fritz Walker, representing Fair Districts PA, gave a short presentation to supervisors on gerrymandering.

There is a move currently being discussed in the state concerning how the state legislative districts are created.

As it is now, districts are created every 10 years with the boundaries drawn by the political party in power.

Districts are created with the party in mind so the elected official retains his party’s majority of voters and would be re-elected each term.

Kaplan and Walker urged the board to pass a resolution in favor of legislation that would eliminate this practice.

According to their statistics, 99 representatives are in favor of this change along with 13 senators.

However, in order for this to happen, the state Constitution would have to be amended.

Supervisors will revisit this item at their February meeting.

In other matters, one-year junkyard licenses were renewed for C. Lick Salvage Inc. at 9575 Old 22, Walbert Contracting at 10176 Schoolhouse Road, and Peters Automotive Services Corp. at 3080 Golden Key Road.

Resolutions covering payment of bills between meetings, workmen’s compensation for firefighters and the user fee schedule were adopted by the board.

Tax Collector Jeff Strauss noted 46 residents had not paid their taxes from last year. These will be forwarded to the delinquent tax agency. Also, two parties have not paid their sewer bills.

The annual winter convention of township official will be held Feb. 9 at Northern Valley Ambulance Corps headquarters, Levans Road, North Whitehall Township.

Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Company responded to 182 calls last year with five so far this year.

The majority of calls in 2017 were for fire, smoke, carbon monoxide and water flow (49) with miscellaneous in second place with 33.
