At the Jan. 15 Macungie Borough Council meeting, President Christopher Becker called attention to the day honoring Martin Luther King Jr. A man of high faith and morals, King believed in peace and love. He was a renowned public figure in American history who had passion in his heart. “Only in darkness are stars seen,” King stated. His legacy remains in today’s world.

Mayor Ron Conrad read a report prepared by the Macungie Police Department. Police are reaching out to the community with events such as Pizza with Police and Coffee with a Cop.

In 2017, there were over 3,000 calls dispatched and 578 citations issued. The busiest time is between 3 and 7 p.m. Conrad said whenever there is a need for ambulance services or fire personnel, the police are there.

The borough’s budget has 24 percent set up for the police department. This expense is similar to other municipalities.

The state-mandated training program is followed in the borough. All Macungie police are state certified which calls for 919 hours of training.

Every month, a representative from the police department will attend the council meeting. The second meeting of the month will be the one attended.

In other business, the problem with parking in the Village Walk neighborhood is in the process of being fixed. The posting of the signs on Village Walk is experiencing some problems due to digging of the holes. There is a problem with underground wires in the area.

The light at Church and Main streets is on hold for the moment due to the need for a part. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has also expressed the need to add another light to this area. This is being researched.

Borough Manager Chris Boehm asked about the need for foreign terrorism insurance. The borough has never had it and decided against this.

Sewer inspection of sewer laterals was discussed. The inspection takes about 15 minutes. It was suggested the zoning officer be responsible for this function. Fees are being discussed.

There will be advertising for bids for Americans with Disabilities Act ramps at Willow and Race streets and Willow Street and Parkside Drive.

A representative from ACELA Engineering stated interest in the MS4 program which is for the stormwater issue. This is under consideration.

The next Macungie Borough Council meeting will be held 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 with a 6:30 p.m. workshop.
