The Emmaus High School Orchestra will host a coffeehouse 7 p.m. Jan. 19 in the cafeteria. A wide variety of musical entertainment will be provided by the students. Coffee, hot chocolate and desserts will be available for purchase. There is a cover charge and all proceeds benefit the orchestra department.

Concordia Lutheran Preschool will hold its annual spaghetti dinner and auction Jan. 27. Tickets can be purchased by calling the church office at 610-965-3265.

Concordia Lutheran Church will hold its annual chili cook-off 2 p.m. Jan. 28 followed by a talent fest and trivia game 3 p.m. All are welcome to taste and judge chili and stay for the fest and trivia game. There is a small donation for your voting pepper.

In Ancient Oak news, the next meeting will be held 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at St. Paul’s UCC; the activity will be making greeting cards. The winners of the Ancient Oaks Decorating Contest are: first place – 7409 Catalpa Drive; second place – 7195 Heather Road and third place 1339 Oak Drive. There will be a hoagie sale in February.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Feb. 6 and 20 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site winter hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off. Be prepared to show a photo I.D. as proof of residency.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Feb. 7 to discuss “Winter Garden” by Kristin Hannah.

There will be a jigsaw puzzle tournament 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 27. Register as a team or individual in your age bracket by Jan. 20. There are student, adult and family divisions. Prizes will be awarded.

The library will host “Cherries, Chocolate and Jazz,” an evening of jazz music by “Austin Kruczek and The Modern Missive” along with appetizers, desserts and wine 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the library. The event tickets (available for 18 years and older) can be purchased at the library or on the website. Proceeds benefit the Lower Macungie Library.

AARP Taxaide counselors offer free tax help for taxpayers with low to moderate income with special attention to those 60 years and older. Before tax season begins, AARP will be at the library to schedule appointment days during tax season. Appointment scheduling days will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 1 and 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 2. Starting Feb. 8 through April 12, counselors will be available noon to 5 p.m. each Thursday to provide assistance with taxes. Appointment slots fill quickly.

Carly’s Craft Corner will offer a scratch off book list for the new year 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 for ages 13 and older.

Classic Conversations: The Bronte Sisters, an informal discussion about the Bronte sisters and their works of literature, will be held 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 6.

There will be a Buckets Full of Nature program for kindergarten through fifth grade students 4 p.m. Feb. 7. The Lehigh County Conservation District will present a program on tracks and traces.

There will be a creation station to make Valentine’s Day Cards 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 10 for children ages two and older. Children five and under must have an adult present with them.

Mardi Gras Monday will be held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 for kindergarten through fifth grade students. Learn about Mardi Gras through books, crafts and food.

There will be a Chinese New Year Celebration 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 featuring Chinese cultural shows, calligraphy, paper cutting, red envelopes, a raffle, displays and food. Special events include a 6 p.m. Hulusi (Chinese musical instrument) performance and a 6:15 p.m. Dizigui (Chinese classic book) recitation. Sign up is requested for the special events.

The next Friends of the Lower Macungie Library meeting is 10 a.m. Jan. 20 in the library. Elections for new officer positions for vice president, treasurer and secretary will be held. New volunteers are welcome.

Donations for the spring book sale will be accepted through March 31. Donations should be placed in the window alcove to the right when entering the library. Please do not donate the following items: VHS and cassette tapes, encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, pamphlets, outdated medical and travel guides, dictionaries and reference books, Reader’s Digest condensed books or items in poor condition.

Volunteers are welcome to help sort through each week’s donations 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday mornings before the library opens.
