Cancer Support Community offers programs

The Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley offers the following free education and support programs for cancer patients and their caregivers in January.

·Gentle Yoga

Jan. 23 and 30: 9:30- 10:45 a.m.

Practice mild stretching accompanied with breathing techniques to quiet the mind and promote healing.

The class is a combination of chair and mat work. This program is free to people affected by cancer. Call 610-861-7555 to register.

·Reiki for Balancing Life

Jan. 23, 6:30 p.m.; and Jan. 31 at 10:45 a.m.

Life challenges that deplete energy (work, family, money, politics, and responsibilities) and how Reiki can assist in clearing these emotional drains will be discussed. Meditation is included.

Instructor is Carrie Beleno. This program is offered free to people affected by cancer.

·Mindful Compassion

Jan. 24 and 31: from 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Learn to use yoga to increase mindfulness and become more aware of what your body is telling you.

Gentle movement with longer held poses will decrease stress and anxiety and restore well-being.

Instructor is Maryanne Godbout DNP, PMHCNS-BC.

·Kids Karate Kempo

Jan. 24 and 31: between 4-4:50 p.m.

Martial arts activities can help children improve balance, increase focus, boost confidence, build stamina, reduce stress and improve overall wellness. Offered in conjunction with Aikido Masters. This program is offered free of charge to people affected by cancer. Call 610-861-7555 to register.

·Kempo Karate for Adults

Jan. 25: from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Are you looking for an exciting way to build strength, reduce stress and increase energy?

Try this fun new way to get your mind and body into shape. In this style of martial arts, you will learn basic self-defense moves, katas, Qigong meditative breathing techniques and exercises to improve overall health and wellness, giving you a complete but easy to do workout.

·T’ai Chi

Jan. 25: 10:45-11:45 a.m.

T’ai Chi is a whole-body exercise system and can be a means of personal transformation.

Gentle postures are used to help reduce stress and fatigue, develop mental relaxation and physical stamina, and regain hope and a sense of active participation in an individual’s own quest for wellness.

No experience is necessary. Wear comfortable clothing. This program is free to people affected by cancer. Call 610-861-7555 to register.

·Wellness Workout

Jan. 22 and 29: 9:30-10:30 a.m.

A safe but progressive work out. All exercises are taught to target the level you’re currently at using interval, functional and core training methods to keep you moving and burning calories.

Instructor is Regina Heiserman, NASM certified personal trainer from GYMGUYZ.

·Creative Expression

Jan. 23: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Use art as supportive expression by creating artwork promoting healing, mindfulness and wellness.

·Healthy Cooking: Hearty Soup

Jan. 24: 5:30-8 p.m.

Located at the CSC-GLV Center. Instructor is Gale Maleskey, RD. This program is offered free to people affected by cancer.

·Understanding Medical Insurance

Jan. 30: 11 a.m.-noon

Become more familiar with common terminology, learn how to read explanation of benefits, and feel confident you are paying only the portion of the services required of you.

Presenter is Sonia Finnegan, senior account executive from Capital BlueCross. This program is offered free to people affected by cancer. Call 610-861-7555 to register.
