Kings of Sing: The King’s Singers bring their 50th anniversary world tour to Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown, at 8 p.m. Jan. 20. The King’s Singers, a British a cappella vocal ensemble, is named after King’s College in Cambridge, England, where the group was formed in 1968 by six choral scholars. The repertoire encompasses Renaissance madrigals, Gilbert and Sullivan, and the Beatles. The double Grammy Award-winning artists were honored for “Simple Gifts” (2009) and contributions to Eric Whitacre’s “Light and Gold” album (2012). “Their vocal production was effortless, stylistically varied and beautifully blended, even in the most complex polyphony,” stated The Washington Post. January jazz: The Laurence Hobgood Trio performs at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in the “Jazz Upstairs” series, Rodale Community Room, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown. Hobgood is a contemporary jazz piano virtuoso, composer, arranger, producer, lyricist and educator. Perhaps best known for his 20-year collaboration with vocalist Kurt Elling, Hobgood has had a varied and dynamic career. In addition to Hobgood’s prowess at the piano, he’s identified by many as a key player in updating the “American Songbook,” particularly his arranging for vocalists. “Hobgood is one of the best pianists of his generation,” stated Mojo Magazine.
