South Whitehall Police Chief John Christman has retired from township employment to take the position director of security services for Lehigh Valley Health Network.
Christman commented during the Jan. 2 South Whitehall Township commissioners’ meeting on his new venture.
“It’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Christman said. “It’s a big force with about 85 security officers. I have a lot to learn.”
Christman, who led the 39-member police department in South Whitehall, began as a patrol officer in the township 25 years ago.
He was promoted to chief in November 2015.
“I never thought I’d be leaving so soon,” Christman said.
Commissioners presented him with a Distinguished Service Award in honor of his commitment and leadership.
Board President Christina “Tori” Morgan offered remarks.
“Chief Christman is well-loved in this community,” Morgan said. “He had a great partnership with Dorney Park and Parkland School District.
Christman’s accomplishments include leading the department through the process of accreditation which was achieved in 2017; support for the K-9 program, Project Lifesaver; and community outreach in events such as Coffee With a Cop.
Christman provided thoughts on his departure.
“I’m absolutely going to miss the guys and the girls,” Christman said. “It’s a great team and a great department.”
Commissioners appointed Lt. Michael Sorrentino as interim chief of police effective 4 p.m. Jan. 5.
Sorrentino has 29 years with the South Whitehall police force.
Commissioner David Bond reported Sorrentino will serve on a temporary basis until a new chief has been designated.
