Lehigh Valley Beekeepers Association will hold a four-session “Introduction to Beekeeping” class 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesday evenings, Feb. 7 and 21 and March 7 and 21. All classes will be held in room 107/108 of Rothrock Library/Alumni Center, Lehigh Carbon Community College, 4525 Education Park Drive, Schnecksville.

There is a registration. The cost includes a reference book, course materials, refreshments and planned field trips to the club apiary for hands-on experience. Those with a student ID as well as youth under the age of 16 years, accompanied by a paying adult, will receive a reduced rate.

The 2018 classes will be the seventh consecutive year these classes have been offered, with past enrollments between 55 and 75 students. Class size is limited.

If you are considering becoming a beekeeper or just interested in the fascinating role honeybees play in our food chain and gardens, these classes will cover basic bee biology; necessary equipment; setting up the hive and adding and feeding the bees; a typical year in the life of a beekeeper; honeybee pests and treatment options and honey extraction.

Instructors will be experienced association beekeepers, including several certified master beekeepers.

If you have questions prior to registering, stop by the Lehigh County Agricultural Center, 4184 Dorney Park Road, Allentown, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Jan. 20 to talk to the instructors. Adults with paid registration prior to or during the Jan. 20 meeting will receive a discount on their registration fee.

The 97-year-old Lehigh Valley Beekeepers Association includes 250 members from the Poconos to Bucks County to New Jersey and west to Lebanon County. The group holds monthly meetings/events as well as seasonal educational sessions at Club Apiary in Schnecksville.
