Dianne Rice of Germansville is quite a quilter. And, she has the blue ribbons to prove it.

At the urging of Kim Fenstermacher, the fiancee of her son, Robert Hughes, she entered a few of her quilts and a pillow in the Bloomsburg Fair at the end of September.

Thanks to Fenstermacher’s efforts, and working on and off for weeks and months on her crafts, paid off as Rice brought home three blue ribbons and an honorable mention for her work.

She won a blue ribbon for her “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” quilt, for which she found the pattern in a book by Eleanor Burns.

Her second blue ribbon was for a snowman pillow. She found that pattern in a magazine.

The third blue ribbon was for a yo-yo quilt, also from a design she found in a magazine.

Rice also took home an honorable mention for her baby puff crib quilt.

Fenstermacher transported the quilts and pillow to the fair.

It wasn’t until Rice, her son and Fenstermacher went to the fair after the judging was completed that they learned she had won the ribbons and $25.

Taking a brief break, Rice is not working on any quilts right now.

“But, you never know with me,” she said.

Rice’s talents are not limited to quilts and pillows, however.

Barbara Marcin of Harrisburg, the aunt of her neighbor, Maryanne Hawk, gave her satin material from an old wedding gown.

The gown belonged to a customer of Marcin’s daughter, Diane, who owns a pet shop in Harrisburg.

From this material, Rice crafted satin Christmas balls.

She also makes pinecone-shaped ribbon decorations that are sold in Diane’s pet shop as a fundraiser for animals in need.

Rice made two “Grandmother” quilts for her daughters Regina and Rita for Christmas. She also made snowman pillows for all her children: Rita, Robert, Regina and Renee.

Rice, however, is keeping the yo-yo puff crib quilt.

“When I am dead and gone, they can fight over it,” she said with a laugh.
