EAST PENN SCHOOL DISTRICT
An organizational meeting was held Dec. 4 by the East Penn Board of School Directors where newly elected board members Adam Smith and Alisa Bowman, as well as re-elected directors Alan Earnshaw and Ziad Munson were sworn in.
Board Secretary Janine Allen briefly presided over the meeting until Director Paul Champagne was elected president pro tempore. Champagne then swore in the new and returning directors and presided over the election of officers.
Directors Earnshaw and Ken Bacher were returned to their previously held posts of president and vice president, respectively, by board vote.
The directors approved the meeting schedule for 2018.
A request to address the board was granted to Emmaus resident John Donchez who shared his opinion on the topic of National Merit Scholarship.
“To me it seems like, if it’s a national thing or whatever, it’s a whole nation and there would be one goal. And that would be everybody goes towards that. And then to see there’s a Hispanic National Merit Scholarship which has different levels, let’s say to obtain.” He added, “The government seems to be able to entertain segregations, which to me is a racist thing.” Donchez also urged the directors, “Please be open and transparent.”
An executive session was held immediately following the organization meeting on personnel items after the public forum.
The East Penn Board of School Directors meet regularly 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each month.
