Salisbury boys basketball head coach Jason Weaver has coached a member of the Reichenbach family in nine straight seasons.

This season will be his last. But 2017 began in a memorable way for both Weaver and the youngest of the Reichenbach family.

Falcon senior Jack Reichenbach, during his 20-point effort in Friday’s season opener against Blue Mountain, went over the 1,000-point mark for his career. Reichenbach pushed his total to 1,009 points for his career and is the eighth Falcon boys basketball player to reach the coveted milestone.

“I knew I needed 13, and I just wanted to get it in the flow of the offense,” Reichenbach said. “I didn’t want to force it and then mess up the team and the game. Being the first game I was nervous, because a bunch of people who wouldn’t come to a game did come tonight to watch me.”

Reichenbach hit the mark early in the third quarter in transition. His fast break layup with under five minutes to play made him the most recent male to reach the mark since Geoff Hoffman did it back in 2001.

“It’s funny, I was so focused on the layup that I totally forgot it was the next point,” Reichenbach said. “I should have dunked it, but I just wanted the points because it was such a close game and we needed those points. It was such a great feeling.”

“It’s quite an honor,” said Weaver, “because when you think about it to get it the first game of your senior year, normally guys are waiting around until the last game or hoping you make the playoffs for more games. Jack is a scorer. He can make baskets and he can get to the foul line.”

Both of Jack’s brothers, Dan and Brendan, played for Weaver during their careers at Salisbury. Both, however, finished with under 500 career points each, giving Jack bragging rights in that department.

Reichenbach scored the first 279 points of his career at Notre Dame (Green Pond) during his freshman season before transferring to Salisbury. Once he arrived in blue and white, he immediately joined the starting line up and became one of the Falcons’ most gifted scorers under Weaver.

And Weaver has never coached a 1,000-point scorer during his long tenure as a coach.

“Credit to their defense, it was pretty tough on him tonight,” Weaver said. “But it’s quite an accomplishment for a young man to do that. Jack’s athleticism is off the charts. It’s been a pleasure to coach him.”

“It’s something that no one in my family has done, which is really cool,” Reichenbach said.
