SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Salisbury Township School District operations committee met Nov. 6 where William Brackett, director of maintenance and grounds provided a report on potential summer projects.

“There is nothing that is in critical failure mode,” Brackett said. “We could take a break this year.”

If the district wanted to work on some projects this summer, Brackett provided a list of capital projects, by priority, the board could consider to pursue.

The first was the varsity softball field including dugouts with storage room and steps leading to the tennis court at a cost of $60,000.

Brackett also suggested installing a guardrail separating the parking lot from the playground at Western Salisbury Elementary School at a cost of $2,000.

Flooring replacement in various buildings was also discussed at a cost of $20,000 as well as ceiling replacement at Harry S Truman Elementary School at a cost of $20,000.

Brackett next suggested replacing the remaining four ceiling units in the Salisbury High School cafeteria/kitchen HVAC at a cost of $55,000.

Salisbury Middle School is considering an addition to the curriculum for a fitness class which would require the renovation of an existing classroom into a fitness room. The renovation would include HVAC, flooring and soundproofing of the room. The HVAC cost was estimated to be $30,000 and Brackett said the rest of the labor would be done by existing personnel. There would be an additional cost for fitness equipment proposed.

Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Lynn Fuini-Hetten said the middle school was considering the fitness room and whether it would be cost-prohibitive to execute as an elective in the program of studies. The board will continue the discussion.

Lastly, Brackett proposed replacing the 1999 Dixie Chopper which he said is too expensive to repair. He asked to purchase the Toro Groundsmaster 7200 which would greatly increase the cutting capacity. In addition, the equipment could be used duirng the winter to clean the sidewalks along Gaskill Avenue, Salisbury Road, Montgomery Street and Dauphin Street which are currently cleared during the winter months by an outside contractor. The equipment would cost $58,000.

Brackett also reported on the district safety committee and said the district buildings are secure. Active shooter drills are being done in all buildings.

In other business, Business Administrator Robert Bruchak said “The 2016-2017 audit was clean.” Bruchak attributed this to “really good staff in the business office.”

Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss offered congratulations to Bruchak and his staff and thanked them for their work.

To complete the audit, $600,000 was assigned to capital projects to comply with the state. That money can be reassigned if needed.

Updated policies continue to be reviewed by the board and will be presented for final reading and approval at the Nov. 15 board meeting.

In other business, Director Mary Ziegler said she was approached by a middle school teacher regarding recycling at SMS. Ziegler said the students are very environmentally conscious. Brackett explained how the recycling works and suggested the teacher contact SHS Principal Heather Morningstar about the recycling project at the high school created by students.

The next operations committee meeting will be held 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at the administration building.
