LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP COLUMN

Lower Macungie Library will be closed Nov. 23 and 24 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 6 for a holiday luncheon. The book for Jan. 3 is “The Snow Child” by Eowyn Ivey.

The library is sponsoring a Longwood Christmas bus trip 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 3. Contact the library to make a reservation.

There are many preschool storytimes throughout the week. The schedule can be found on www.lowermaclib.org.

The Teen Advisory Board will meet 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 15 for students in grades six to 12.

The fall book sale will be held 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and 18. On Nov. 18 the bag sale will begin 2:30 p.m. The member preview night is 5 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16. Memberships are available at the door. All proceeds will benefit the library.

Donations for the spring book sale will be accepted starting Jan. 8, 2018.

The next Friends of the Lower Macungie Township Library meeting is 10 a.m. Jan. 20, 2018, in the library. Elections for new officer positions will be held. New Friends are welcome.

The ninth annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center. Over 100 crafters and vendors will participate. Brookside Deli will offer lunch items 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A free shuttle from the parking lot to the door is provided by Corporate Limousine.

The Bartholomew Center for the Preservation of Lower Macungie Township History will hold its grand opening noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 19. The museum is located in the lower level of the barn at Camp Olympic. Updated information can be found on the historical society website www.lmthistory.org.

The Lower Macungie Historical Society has co-sponsored the production of a 2018 calendar featuring the rail lines that cut through the township. The calendar will be available at the new museum.

Concordia Lutheran Church, 2623 Brookside Road, will hold a Thanksgiving Eve Service with a hymn sing 7 p.m. Nov. 22 with a pie fest immediately following. For more information, call 610-965-3265.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit the community center 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 3. Bar None Photography will be available to take pictures with Santa. Avoid the crowds at the mall.

The Lower Macungie Township Historical Society will hold Christmas at the Log House 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 10. There will be an open house at the historic Bortz log house at the Wescosville Recreation area on Route 222. The house will be decorated for Christmas in period fashion and lighted by candles. All are welcome. The log house is located near the eastern entrance of the Hamilton Crossings shopping center.

In Ancient Oak news, the Ancient Oak Women’s Organization will meet for a cookie exchange 7 p.m. (please note the time change) Dec. 6 at St. Paul’s U.C.C. Each member should bring six dozen cookies. There will also be a cutthroat Santa exchange and members are asked to bring a monetary donation for a needy family.

Ancient Oak will hold a Holiday House Decorating Contest with cash prizes. The judging date has yet to be determined.

Concordia Lutheran Church will hold Advent worship services 7 p.m. Dec. 6, 13 and 20. There will be an Advent supper 6 p.m.

The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the 12th annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday through Dec. 1. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center. Over the last 11 years 1,005 boxes of donated items were sent to 119 soldiers.

The community center is collecting new children’s pajamas and books during the fall and holiday season. Items will be donated to local area children. A large receptacle is located in the lobby through Dec. 18.

Curbside leaf collection continues through the week of Nov. 27. Leaves must be out for collection by Nov. 26.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 and 19 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site winter hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed on Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for drop off. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
