Alburtis Police Chief Robert Palmer attended the Nov. 8 Alburtis Borough Council meeting and reported there has been no difference in truck traffic. Palmer said his department pulled over 90 trucks for not staying on the proper roads in October. Resident Deb Larson was at the meeting to discuss her own experience with truckers in the borough.

Larson talked about how trucks were going over the borough’s railroad bridge, which has a 5 ton weight limit, and told about an interaction she had with a truck driver trying to cross the bridge.

Once Larson parked her car across the bridge to prevent a truck from crossing the bridge. She ended up getting out of the car and getting into a confrontation with the truck driver. Larson has had experience as a trucker as well as a dispatcher and warehouse experience. She suggested the borough consider no longer giving trucks warnings for first offenses.

Larson was concerned about the borough’s roads and the safety of its residents. Council said Lower Macungie Township should pick up more responsibility for the trucking issue.

Palmer was given authorization to extend offers of employment to Brock Termini and Troy Leonard.

In other business, council made a motion to advertise the budget. Council said there is no frill or fluff in the budget and the challenge was more about controlling expenses. The motion was approved.

Council approved the purchase of a 2018 Ford F350 for approximately $35,000.

There was discussion of playground tree removal. Council had concerns whether the tree should be cut down since it still seems to be in good shape. The issue was tabled until the next meeting.

There was discussion about the rental inspections occurring in the borough as many properties did not pass inspections mainly due to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The borough will have to charge units for additional inspections.

Council agreed to donate $1,000 to the local child abuse investigator. Council has been making donations for several years. They feel the donation is important.

The Alburtis Christmas festival will be held Dec. 3. There will be an added one-mile fun run this year which will not close any state road. The run will start and end at the fire company.

Council went into an executive session at the end of the meeting with no decisions announced

Alburtis Borough Council meets on the second and last Wednesdays of the month. The next meeting will be held 7 p.m. Nov. 29 in Alburtis Borough Hall.
