‘They served; we honor’

The Emmaus Veterans Committee, comprised of members from the Emmaus American Legion Post 191, the Emmaus Catholic War Veterans Post 1067 and the Marine Corps League Detachment #296, provides various services to honor veterans.

“We suggest veterans put in writing their wishes for a military funeral, or at least discuss the issue with one or more family members, Emmaus Veterans Committee member Len Hvizdos said. “If the veteran in your family has not raised this issue, a family member should discuss with the veteran what type of military recognition, if any, the veteran would like at their funeral service.”

Hvizdos said local funeral directors are very helpful and know the committee is very flexible in how veterans are honored.

Options available include a simple service, silent or vocal, in the funeral home, a simple service, silent or vocal and TAPS, outside the funeral home or a traditional service with Honor Guard, rifle volley and TAPS at the funeral home, church or the gravesite. Other requests are also considered.

Hvizdos said the veterans serving on the funeral detail consider it an honor to recognize the service of veterans.
