EDITOR’S NOTE: The Press has been informed the event producers have canceled the Lantern Festival Oct. 11 scheduled for Oct. 14. Bell Gate Farm has organized an event in place of the Lantern Festival for children 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at Bell Gate Farm, 7081 Bell Gate Road, Coopersburg. The event will include food by Outlaw BBQ, pumpkin carving and contest, live music, face painting, coloring contest, cooking demonstration, a bounce house and more. Event entry is free and a portion of the food proceeds will benefit victims of the U.S. Virgin Islands. There will be collection boxes around the event for donations. Registration at kidsfreefest.splashthat.com is requested, though Stephanie Stevens, owner of Bell Gate Farm, also said people can just show up. Although Lower Milford supervisors voted unanimously in September to look into revoking the permit for the upcoming Lantern Festival, pending approval by Solicitor Mark Cappuccio, the festival is still on.

Cappuccio reported to the board at the Oct. 5 meeting, the permit could not be rescinded.

Last month’s Lantern Festival created problems with trash, crowd control and traffic control. Township Manager Ellen Koplin, along with state police and fire personnel met recently with representatives of the sponsoring company to discuss festival problems, including a first aid station, traffic measures and larger clean up crews.

In other business, the supervisors agreed to prepare a resolution for the Southwest Lehigh Multi-Municipal Comprehensive Plan.

Under the plan, Lower Milford Township, Upper Milford Township, Lower Macungie Township, Alburtis, Emmaus and Macungie would work together on zoning requests from businesses wanting to operate in one of the municipalities. It is an effort to protect the character of the six communities.

As supervisor John Quigley said, if a company applies for zoning for a recycling plant in Lower Milford Township and a recycling plant is already operating in Macungie, the request could be denied.
