NASD contracts with I-U for remediation

The Northampton Area School District Board of Education has approved a letter of agreement between NASD and Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 to provide remedial instruction in reading and math to nonproficient students in qualifying nonpublic schools at a cost of $13,110 for instruction; $132 for parent involvement programming; and 3 percent of the total for CIU 20 administrative service fee. Costs for the nonpublic school services are covered through a 2017-18 Title I grant.

NASD school directors also voted 9-0 at the Sept. 25 board meeting to approve:

• A letter of agreement between NASD and Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 to provide professional development to the identified nonpublic school teachers through the Title IIA grant submission in the amount of $8,595.19, with costs for the nonpublic school professional development covered through the 2017-18 Title IIA grant with no additional costs to NASD;

• Updated job descriptions for director of special education, assistant director of special education, superintendent and supervisor of transportation, effective Sept. 25; additions and deletions to the substitute listing for the 2017-18 school year; revised master district volunteer list for the 2017-18 school year; and mentor-inductee list for the 2017-18 school year, including stipend payments;

• Christina Thrash, Gene Thrash and Amanda Millhouse to chaperone the student Education First educational tour for approximately 20 students to Greece and Italy, July 11-23, 2018. There is no cost to the district for the trip;

• Terry Leh and Jason Williamson to attend the annual Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials Conference, Hershey, March 6-9, 2018, at an approximate cost of $2,021;

• Attendance of school board members Dr. Michael Baird, David Gogel and Chuck Longacre at the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators-Pennsylvania School Board Association School Leadership Conference, Hershey, Oct. 18-20, at an estimated cost of $2,377.48;

• Laura Tominaj, to attend 2017 Kappa Delta Pi Convocation, Pittsburgh, Oct. 26-28, at an approximate district cost of $200, included in the 2017-18 school board-approved curriculum budget conference expenses;

• Five-year service agreement with ThyssenKrupp Elevator Corp., Allentown, for the three elevators at Northampton Area High School and the one elevator at Siegfried Elementary School at an annual fee of $4,800 for September through August 2022;

•Accept with appreciation a $3,142.48 donation to NASD from Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation to purchase WiFi connections for Project Pride Chromebook initiative; and

• Accept with appreciation a donation of school supplies for needy students at George Wolf Elementary School from Zion Stone United Church of Christ, Kreidersville.

The NASD Board of Education next meets 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the administration building, 2014 Laubach Ave. The meetings are open to the public. The agenda includes time for public comment on agenda and non-agenda items. The school board meeting agenda is usually published on the Friday before a Monday meeting on the NASD website.
