The Lower Macungie Fire Department will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at the fire station at Sauerkraut Lane. There will be information on fire prevention, face painting, fire truck tours, the Medevac helicopter, state police representatives, food and beverages.

The Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Quarry Road, Alburtis, will hold a craft bazaar 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14. There will be crafts, a white elephant, gift basket auction, bake sale and food.

Curbside yard waste collection will be the week of Oct. 9 to 13 on the same day as trash collection. Containers/bundles should be placed separately at the curb on the regular collection day. Curbside leaf collection begins the week of Oct. 16 and continues through the week of Nov. 27. Leaves must be out for collection by Nov. 26.

There will be a Father-Daughter Dance “Date Night Sweetheart Hoedown” for girls enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Lower Macungie Community Center.

There will be Breakfast With Snoopy 9 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4 for infants through 12 years old with a parent or caregiver at the community center. Advanced registration is required.

The board of commissioners and staff are holding the 12th annual Troop support program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday through Dec. 1. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center. Over the last 11 years, 1,005 boxes of donated items have been sent to 119 soldiers.

The community center will collect new children’s pajamas and books during the fall and holiday season. Items will be donated to local area children. A large receptacle is located in the lobby through Dec. 18.

The ninth annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at the community center. Over 100 crafters and vendors will participate. Brookside Deli will offer lunch 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A free shuttle from the parking lot to the door is provided by Corporate Limousine.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Oct. 2 and 16 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Oct. 4 to discuss “The Round House” by Louise Erdrich. The book for Nov. 1 is “Little Chapel on the River” by Gwendolyn Bounds.

In honor of Constitution and Citizenship Day, representatives from the Lehigh County Historical Society will talk about the history of the American presidency 6 p.m. Sept. 28.

Licensed appraisers Rochelle Christopher and John Thompson of Victorian Vanities Inc. will be available for an antique appraisal event 1 p.m. Oct. 7. If you would like to bring in up to two items, you must register at the circulation desk by Sept. 30.

There will be a database basics program for grades sixth through 12th, 1 p.m. Sept. 23. Students can learn about how to access some great databases for school work. Registration is required.

Buckets Full of Nature for students in grades kindergarten through fifth will be offered 4 to 5 p.m. Sept. 25. The theme this month will be local Native American tribes and the harvest.

Businesses and individuals can compete for the title of “Lower Macungie Library’s Best Soup” at the second annual taste of soup noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 28. The library is accepting book donations through Oct. 14 for the fall book sale being held Nov. 17 and 18. The library will not accept textbooks, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, magazines, outdated medical or travel books or dirty or water damaged books.

The next Friends of the Lower Macungie Township Library meeting is 10 a.m. Oct. 21 in the library. New members are welcome. Sorting for the book sale takes place 8:30 to 10 a.m. every Thursday in the library. Fine sorting will begin Oct. 20 in preparation for the book sale.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site spring/summer hours through Oct. 31 are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. The center is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off. Applications can be found at www.lowermac.com. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
