ALBURTIS BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Sept. 13 meeting of the Alburtis Borough Council meeting began with the discussion of a resolution for a cell tower that would be built on borough property.
The cell tower was discussed at a previous meeting. Verizon wanted to build a cell tower on the edge of the borough’s baseball field. It was suggested a 300-foot fence be built around the field and have the cell tower just beyond the field. There was a debate about whether the fence would have an impact on how games were played on the field.
During the Sept. 13 meeting, a resolution was approved stating the borough would not resign the original land lease agreement approved on Jan. 13, 2016, since Verizon did not accept the borough’s offer within a reasonable period of time. The resolution also stated borough council is no longer willing to enter into the land lease agreement with Verizon or any agreement leasing a portion of the ball field property to Verizon.
Council members also talked about a recent issue of sewers backing up. It was discovered the issue stemmed from balls of grease in the sewer. It was mentioned that when grease is poured down the drain it does not break down easily and mixes with other grease in the sewers eventually building up and causing blockages.
Council then discussed the resignation of Alburtis Zoning Board Chairman Nick Evans. Evans had moved out of the borough and it will no longer be possible for him to keep in touch with the needs of the community.
There was also an update about the borough’s rental ordinance. Borough Manager Sharon Trexler said there were 144 residents who did not report the required information and the rental inspections are going well.
Another topic discussed was a proposal for a telecommunications tower by Martin Environmental Solutions Inc. The company submitted the proposal for their client, TowerCo 2013 LLC. The tower would be 150 feet and would be built on a 50-foot-by-50-foot fenced in area. There would be a 20 foot wide access and utility easement.
There was also a discussion about adding a handicapped parking space at the borough’s baseball field. Borough Solicitor David Knerr said there did not need to be an ordinance. There was a motion made that was unanimously approved.
The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will be Sept. 27. Meetings take place on the second and last Wednesdays of the month. Meetings start 7 p.m. and take place in Alburtis Borough Hall.
