Nobody does Bond better: Broadway diva Rachel York joins ASO for Pops opener

A Broadway diva meets a suave secret agent on Sixth Street in Allentown when songstress Rachel York joins the Allentown Symphony Orchestra for the 2017-18 season-opening Pops Concert, “The Music Of James Bond And More,” 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

York is well-known for her Broadway performances in the original Tony Award-winning production of “City of Angels”; “Les Miserables”; “Victor/Victoria” (Drama Desk Award), with Julie Andrews; “Sly Fox,” with Richard Dreyfuss, and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” with Jonathan Pryce.

“Rachel York is today’s most striking dramatic and musical-comedy heroine, deliciously fusing talent with looks,” raved John Simon, reviewing “The Best Is Yet To Come.”

She starred as Reno Sweeney in national tour of the 2011 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical revival, “Anything Goes” (Helen Hayes Award). Her other national tours include the role of Cruella de Vil, which she originated, in “The 101 Dalmatians Musical,” receiving a People’s Choice Award from BroadwayWorld.com, and Kate in “Kiss Me Kate.”

Her off-Broadway roles include the revues, “Best Is Yet To Come: The Music of Cy Coleman,” conceived and directed by David Zippel; “Stephen Sondheim’s Putting It Together,” and Dorothy Shaw in the acclaimed New York City Center Encores! production of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”

Regional productions include “The King And I,” Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia; “Turn Of The Century,” opposite Jeff Daniels, Goodman Theatre, Chicago, and “The Odd Couple,” with Jason Alexander and Martin Short.

She can be seen in the movies, “It Had To Be You” (2015), as Lori the Mystery Woman, as well as “One Fine Day,” “Billy Bathgate” and “Au Pair II.”

Showing her versatility, she portrayed Lucille Ball in the television movie, “Lucy.” York was a guest star on “The Mick” on FOX-TV and “Elementary” on CBS-TV. Additional TV credits include “Hannah Montana,” “Frasier,” “Reba,” and “Spin City.”

She will appear as Morticia Addams, opposite Bronson Pinchot as Gomez, in the musical, “The Addams Family” in California productions at Fullerton’s Plummer Auditorium, Oct. 10-25, and the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, Oct. 31-Nov. 8.

York has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras, including including the National Symphony, Philly Pops, Pittsburgh Pops, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, and many others around the world.

Her solo debut album is “Let’s Fall In Love.”

Ron Demkee, who conducts the Allentown Symphony Orchestra in its Pops series, has high praise for the musicians: “The orchestra is so versatile, able to adapt to jazz or light rock or big band music. They are a group of wonderful musicians and great to work with.”

He notes that Pops concerts have been a feature of the orchestra for close to 10 years. He adds, “The orchestra does four or five pops concerts, plus five regular classical subscription concerts, the “Nutcracker” ballet in the holiday season, plus youth concerts and other musical outings.”

Demkee says, “The audience can look forward to enjoyable stuff and some nostalgia.” He says the concert will be “almost exclusively a James Bond show, with most of the pieces by John Barrie for the movies.” York will join the orchestra for eight numbers.

The ASO, with guest soloist York, will perform music from five decades of Bond films, including songs by iconic singers and songwriters Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Adele and more.

The program includes a “James Bond Medley” (“Nobody Does It Better,” “Live And Let Die,” “For Your Eyes Only,” “The Look Of Love,” “007 Theme” and “Thunderball”).

Also, listen for “Goldfinger,” “You Only Live Twice,” “Secret Agent Man,” “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service/A View to Kill,” “Diamonds Are Forever,” “Opening Theme From Russia With Love” and “Skyfall.”
