Slaters bring strong running game
During last week’s loss to Wilson, Salisbury struggled to get off blocks from the Warriors offensive line. The end result was a near 100-yard rushing day for Job Goodman, and over 240 total yards from the junior running back.
With another team that features a strong running game set to visit Salisbury High School on Friday night, that was the focal point during film session early in the week. Head coach Andy Cerco hopes it translates onto the field Friday night as the Falcons (2-1) host Bangor (1-2) at 7 p.m.
“What we looked at on film is that when our defensive linemen are able to get their hands on the offensive linemen, we are a lot more successful,” Cerco said. “That is something we are going to focus on when we stop the run, getting our hands on people and staying with the blockers. That allows our entire team to get to ball.”
Leading Bangor’s running game is tailback Garrett DeBoar, a runner who proved last week just how dynamic he could be. After Bangor fell behind 21-7 against Northern Lehigh, DeBoar’s 184 yards on the ground and two touchdowns helped spring seven straight Slater touchdowns to take control.
He wasn’t the only one who had success in the running game. Running back Shemar Petrie carried just nine times against the Bulldogs, but he tallied 57 yards and two of those carries ended in the end zone for touchdowns.
“Offensively they are pretty straight-forward,” Cerco said. “They run a lot of pro sets, and they like to run iso, toss and power, which is basically straight at you. Their fullback is a pretty good player.”
DeBoar is unquestionably the workhorse. He has accumulated over 300 yards on the ground so far through three games. And he’s just as gifted in the special teams facet of the game, as he returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown last week.
Bangor quarterback Bo Meyers is also a focal point for Cerco and the Falcons heading into Week 4. Meyers threw a touchdown against the Bulldogs last week.
“Their quarterback throws a nice ball,” Cerco said. “He seems like a pretty good quarterback.
“Those things stood out the most. Their fullback is impressive.”
Despite game planning for a number of different schemes and players on Friday night, Cerco believes that if his team continues to work on perfecting the details, the Falcons will be in solid shape.
They were able to do that in the first two weeks of the season, resulting in a quick 2-0 start.
“I think it’s how close we were to making a few key plays that would have definitely impacted the course of the game,” Cerco said of the Wilson game. “Whether it be a blocker sealing a block, or a running back seeing a cut here and there, it’s the little things that make a big difference.”
