MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Lower Lehigh Lions Club spoke at the Sept. 5 Macungie Borough Council meeting about the upcoming Halloween Parade.

The parade will take place Oct. 28 and will begin forming 6 p.m. at the Eyer Middle School and Shoemaker School parking lots with the parade starting 7:15 p.m. The second annual fun run will start 6:45 p.m. and this year it will benefit the Friends of the Macungie Institute.

A major topic discussed at the meeting was the winning bid for the refuse and recycling contract. The contract was awarded to Advance Disposal for five years with a three-year extension. Once a week pick up was specified and there will be a slight savings compared to the current service. The change in service is effective Nov. 1.

There was a discussion about the pension for the borough employees. The actuary gave council two options and the council has to decide which one to use. Council decided to table the discussion until the next meeting.

The issue of parking in front of mailbox clusters was also discussed. Council wants to know how many mailbox clusters there are throughout the borough.

The Macungie Fire Department has been a reoccurring topic at council meetings. Council President Chris Becker has the documents council requested which showed the fire department has been making progress on action items council previously asked about.

Council discussed two sewer ordinances during the meeting. One had to do with lateral inspections while the other had to do with complying with Allentown’s Industrial Waste Ordinance. The borough manager is working on both ordinances and expects to have a draft for lateral inspections at the next meeting.

The Lower Lehigh Lions Club made a proposal for the Macungie Institute during the meeting to add push pads to already existing handicap accessible ramps.

There was an executive session regarding personnel at the end of the meeting and action was taken.

The next Macungie Borough Council meeting will take place Sept. 18. Meetings typically take place on the first and third Mondays of the month except on holidays where the meetings are on the following Tuesday. Meetings are 7:30 p.m. and take place in Macungie Borough Hall.
